Is he in the IRR? My understanding was that he completed his service requirements.

I don't understand what they're doing with troop deployments... My girlfriend's cousin (he's a Marine) who had been in Okinawa was deployed to Kuwait a few months ago, but he just came back and now he's in California. Weird.

Ital is right, I completed my 8 years some time ago.

Macvillage: there is no need for a draft. All they need to do is expand recruiting a bit. The army was about twice the size when I first joined it than it is now. They didn't need a draft then, they don't need it now. But in my opinion, they do need two or three more divisions (it is 8 divisions smaller than it was as recently as 1991). Remember, we used to have 300,000 troops in Europe alone.

Need and want, are two different things.

I need a more powerful computer (honestly, wouldn't mind a G5 powerbook, since my only laptop is a Thinkpad, and my desktop is a G3).

I want a 1100 Xserve cluster.

If I had the power to get what I need/want... what would I get?

They (meaning the Brass) especially don't want it. If you think that people who understand that they actually signed up for 8 years and who end up getting called back in are surly and resentful, try a draftee army. Nobody in the military wants to go back to that.

What does 'expand recruiting' mean? Do they just tell every recruiter "go get us 500 this year, instead of 300" or do they change the incentives offered new recruits? What if people just don't want to sign up, because we're actively engaged in three wars?

Will they release a new video game?

That old "what if" game. The military is meeting its targets now, there is no reason to suppose they wouldn't meet their targets if the targets were increased back to the levels they were in the 1980s. This may surprise you anti-war types, but the fact we are at war is an incentive to many people. Patriotism, and the opportunity to contribute something important for one's country is a significant reason why people enlist.

I don't know anyone in the military, nor any recruiters.
I was actually curious to know how difficult it is to get the required number of recruits.

I have never been a recruiter, but they usually seem to meet their targets. The bigger issue is usually the quality of recruit. Obviously, when you are only trying to maintain a smaller Army, you can be a little more picky. As the drawdown in the early 90s took effect, the quality went up somewhat. At one point, the US Army was recruiting only people with high school diplomas or better (i.e. no GEDs). That wasn't the case in the 80s when the Army was bigger, and it may not be the case now. Other variables are minor past scrapes with the law, prior drug use (mostly pot). Lots of people are turned away on those, but don't have to be.

The Army is probably the least picky followed perhaps by the Navy. Other branches are actually quite difficult to get into. Especially the Air Force and Marines. They turn people down frequently. Again, if you want to expand enrollment, you just turn away slightly fewer.
