Masked Muslim men carrying weapons and invoking their religion in a quest for violence, hmm... I wonder what we'd usually call those kinds of people.

The only bad thing about this is if they are successful, the new government is going to really suffer.
If a bunch of militants beat the US/Iraqi's to this guy... nobody will ever respect that government.
I'm predicting riots with lots of casualities (both American soldiers, Iraqi government leaders, and quite a few civilians).
No way that's going to happen without.
This is really an indirect threat at the US/Iraqi government. If problems don't get fixed [as promised] soon... they take matters into their own hands [for better or for worse].
It's got it's advantages, but it's also got it's disadvantages.
Spiff: These guys are wearing masks because they are well aware of the above. They don't want to be intercepted before they meet their objective. The US obviously doesn't want anything that will interfere with acceptance of the new gov, or stability.
The US wants him on their own ideally. For intelegence reasons (we may attempt to get him alive, or stalk him a bit to see who he interacts with, and persue more). They will just kill.
They get angry at us: we leave.
They get angry at Iraqi Government: Taliban move in.

Militia tend to do that ... even in the US of A.
I don't know why anyone is happy to see this sort of thing happening. If the current violence turns into a full scale civil war, everyone, including the Americans will lose. American troops already can't handle the violence in Iraq. If there's a counter-Insurgency, then either the rest of the world will have to bail them out or it might be conscription time.

To set your record straight, US troops and military could have wiped out hotspots like Fallujah in minutes if it had to. It's not a matter of being able to handle it, but rather being able to maintain an equilibrium that satisfies political and cultural goals and agendas.

This is good news. Some Iraqis seem to have more sense than the "palestinians" for example. If your own kind doesn't stand up to thugs, terrorists and murderers then the problem will not go away.
How about some decapitation videos of these thugs, when they catch them ? That would be pretty funny, and poetic justice. Decapitation is actually too nice for the terrorists, they should take care of them "Mafia" style. (penis in mouth)
