The Governor of NJ just announced his resignation because, although married, he had an affair with a man. I watched the news conference and it was excruciating. Just painful to watch.

That is just Messed up. I would have thought he would have come out about it and even though he had an affair would have held his post. Also you would have thought that since this is the Case NJ would have been the first state with gay marriage. This is some crazy news that is breaking. I feel sorry for his wife and kids because of this. Affairs are never good.

We all knew that was coming. So do lots of people, but what do they have to do with this story?

Who knows why he decided to resign. It's his choice if he wants to or not.

Well it was a gay affair, so that may have had something to do with it.
But maybe there's still more to the story than what he said in his press conference.

I just wanted to get that out of the way...
Although I do think that on the list of things I'd want to fire a polititian for, bopping someone who's not his wife is not very high...

There has to be more to this story. Because I agree with you on that even if it is another man.

There are reports that he's anticipating a sexual harassment suit from a former security aide who, it appears, had no security qualifications. That's probably why he was forced to come out. If so, it's probably prudent for him to resign.
Gee - it's amazing what people will go through in order to choose to be gay.

Poor wife.
I always think it is so awful well gay men get married to a woman only later to have an affair with a man. It is much more humiliating for the woman.
I see "straight men" with babyseats in the back on their wifes car pick up transvestite prostitutes all the time.

But yeah, his wife was there at the press conference. Ugh. It was all so humiliating that he probably earned more sympathy than anything.

There's a lot more to the story. You all should read up on it.
Nutshell: McGreevey, who I've known was gay for at least 5 years, had gone to great lengths to cover up, or hide, his sexual identity. The local and national press was sure to not mention anything, even though a few of his sexual romps were well known via word-of-mouth.
So now he's Governer of NJ, and sure enough there is widespread corruption in his administration - buyoffs, suspect contract awards, and a bunch of other skumbag stuff. Investigations force top official resignations. Ultimately, the problem here was the fact that mafiosos and other corrupt officials had McGreevy's closet homosexuality as a blackmail weapon.
Then, McGreevey gave his Israeli boyfriend the NJ Homeland Security post without clearing his credentials. AFAIK, this boyfriend wasn't even a US citizen. Anyway, news of that breaks (of course, not that he's McGreevey's boyfriend), and the boyfriend gets let go.
McGreevey's closeting is still barely maintained. That is, until he decides to dump his Israeli boyfriend...
WABC-TV of New York reported that McGreevey was expecting a lawsuit by a former aide accusing him of sexual harassment. The station identified the former aide as Golan Cipel, who resigned as McGreeveys security adviser in 2002 after months of questioning about his credentials and job qualifications.
A former Israeli sailor and a published poet, Cipel, 33, was criticized because he did not have a security clearance or law enforcement background. He had worked in television news and public relations.
McGreevey's whole lie comes crashing down. And like the master politician that he is, he announces his resignation with a speech geared to headline as "NJ Governor Resigns Because He's Gay".

hmmm.... I almost would've thought the contrary. At least it gives the wife a decent excuse ("Well, as it turns out .. he was gay") as opposed to ("Well, it looks like I'm not a good as some other woman"). Seems like it would reflect less poorly on the wife's adequacy/inadequacy. Of course, I guess there could always be the implication that the wife was so horrible that it turned the husband toward men ....
... pardon me while I go off to think myself in circles on this issue

His current wife has known he was gay for their entire marriage.
Wife #1 was the shocked one, and she filed for divorce almost immediately after the then-mayor McGreevey was nailed by state police at a rest area engaging in male-male sexual activity.

Because his entire life of hiding his sexuality, and decades of compromising his public positions (ie-corrupt activities) was about about to blow up.
How? His ex-boyfriend was bringing a sexual harassment lawsuit against him, and the whole house of cards was about to fall.
Don't believe this "I cheated on my wife and I now realize that I'm gay" crap that McGreevey and the media would have you believe. He's been a practicing, albeit closeted, homosexual since he was 15.

That would be my guess. He is going to get tried in the court of public opinion: Would he rather it be as a "confused", contrite gay man or as a backdoor-dealing friend of the mob? I would say he'll get WAY more sympathy, and perhaps leniency in the eyes of the law, for the former than for the latter.

Only because of the lawsuit against him. Better to resign than impeached. He must know he cannot win the court case. If this wasn't on his back (lawsuit) then he should never of resigned. His current wife had to of know he was gay. But he shouldn't of sexually harrased someone. Being Gay is not the issue of his resignation IMHO.

I'm sure it's a whole lot more than just the lawsuit against him by his former lover. IMO he is just using this "affair" he had with a man as a way of saving some face before the sh!t hits the fan.

Do you see the problem yet? People let their desires rule them rather than ruling their desires.
(disclaimer: I am NOT saying being a homosexual has any other similarities to these things other than the fact that they are all a choice.)

Actually, it's more about WHO his ex-boyfriend is.
Golan Cipel is an israeli who McGreevey insisted was perfect for a homeland security position in the state because of his Israeli experience.... some research shows he has pretty much no experience what so ever... in fact most israeli citizens have more experience than him. He was no more qualified for the position than anyone else in the state of NJ who knew how to read. Most in NJ knew when this happened that there was something very wrong taking place. McGreevey passed up some very good people for this moron. People who actually knew about terrorism, and security (could do the job). Why he felt the need to do this is still questionable (bribe? sexual favors? blackmale?)
Regarding the relationship This isn't new. A reporter commented more than once about the two, and a possible relationship. This was just confirmed the other day... pretty much the equivilant of Clinton's speach after the testimony in his investigation. Everyone knew, he just confirmed it.
There's corruption, and more corruption wrapped in sex. Nothing more.

But he's not accused or suspected of doing anything that other govenors, and mayors aren't doing.
THAT is what caused the resignation. That alone.
