Here's a great list. Shows where the US is headed.

I've blogged a bunch I've had to read in school (most in a very conservative catholic school)... a few struck me though:

In particular Harry Potter.... especially after this:

Any thoughts?

Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut

Wouldn't seem to pose a threat. That's a bizaare choice to ban, along with To Kill a Mockingbird. Oh well.

A great number of those books are banned because they use the word "******."

And I have no idea why Catcher In The Rye would be banned, anywhere. I read it in high school, as most students have, and nothing stood out as being extremely offensive. Good book.

Unless it's because of the whole Oswald, Mark Chapman connection.

Banned by whom? The list you linked says 'Challenged Books". There is always some dink that is going to try and get a book thrown out for some lame reason or another. But I still see these books for sale, I still see them being taught in public schools. How about a little context? Who has banned them, and from where. To just say "These books are banned and it's a sign of things to come in the US" is a bit misleading, don't you think?

When I was teaching, I had Catcher in the Rye in my curriculum. If I remember correctly, it was originally banned back in the day due to language, which is pretty tame by today’s standards.

Yet another silly thread. Banned ? Then why can I order or read just about any one of the books on that list ? Yeah, very banned, extremely hard to get.

If you aren't completely appalled, then you haven't been paying attention.

Catcher in the Rye isn't in the top 10 anymore? Good for it. It was originally banned partly due to language, but I think largely due more its 'subversive' social commentary. Remember, Catcher was originally published in 1951. Where's Waldo is #88, woohoo! Damn that Waldo, I knew he was up to something...

Speaking of "banned" books, a true example is that John Kerry book from 71 or 72. EBay - $500, when it shows up from time to time, I read.

Depends where you live.

I know one school district where green eggs and ham is forbidden. No joke: The idea of 'green eggs' was considered 'psychedelic', and related to drug use. And in efforts to keep kids off drugs, all books that could make kids thing drugs are good, should be kept away from them.

Dr. Seuss!

Then you have dozens of science textbooks that are printed in two editions. Depending if evolution and Darwin are present.

That's so bizzaro; the two have nothing to do with each other. One is science, the other religion.

As a first-amendment fundamentalist, I find things like this to be abominable. Free sheech does not and should not shield you from prosecution for any other crimes you may commit, but free speech itself should be held as absolute and sacrosanct.

That said, what's this about Where's Waldo being banned? I mean, I can kinda-sorta see problems that the terminally-insecure might have with Huckleberry Finn or The Catcher in the Rye, but Where's Waldo?! WTF?
You are in Soviet Russia. It is dark. Grue is likely to be eaten by YOU!

Careful. With a statement like that, you're liable to get Zimphire riled up.

Perhaps you missed "See also_Challenges by Initiator, Institution, Type, and Year." which is the second line and link at the site Macvillage.net linked to for the list? Whether or not the opening post is misleading is one thing you can decide for yourself but the context you request was provided with it by posting the link.

I agree 100%.

The story I heard (not sure if it's true) is that Where's Waldo makes dislexic kids feel unwelcome.
