I don't know about any of that but I won $5 because he said "girlie-man".

I just knew he'd say it.

When I was a boy, the Soviets occupied part of Austria. I saw their tanks in the streets. I saw communism with my own eyes. I remember the fear we had when we had to cross into the Soviet sector. Growing up, we were told, "Don't look the soldiers in the eye. Look straight ahead." It was a common belief that Soviet soldiers could take a man out of his own car and ship him off to the Soviet Union as slave labor.
Oh, pluheez.

wtf is he talking about? austria in part socialist? slave labor?

i think he took too many steroids in the 80s...fu<ked with his memory...

i think the extensive child prostitution and immigrant smuggling networks in modern day eastern europe make slave labour seem pale in comparison.

You should've posted the menacing shot of him pointing his finger. And being a girlyman, menstruation is the likely culprit.

I wonder what the guy said to get Al so riled up, or if he even was that riled up. For all we know he just walked over, yelled something at him, did a little finger-pointing, and walked off. I'll be sure to refresh FudgeReport every 5 seconds to stay on top of things!

Logan, I'm disappointed.

Even PacHead got the memo and now refers to "Bush-haters" rather than "America-haters".

I know you're slow, but please, try to keep up.

Talk about gaps in the logic: According to Arnie logic: America won the Cold War, freed Austria from slavery and therefore you should vote for George Bush.

Notice how Arnie fails to mention that the Dad and Uncle he was afraid would be taken away from him were both Nazis and that their country and the party they belonged to specifically was responsible for the massacre of 19 million Russian people!

What is this fictitious memo you speak of ? I have received no such thing, and I do not refer to "America-haters" as "Bush-haters" now. Those are two different groups, though certain people can certainly qualify for both. They are nonetheless different, and they both do exist.

And just how old is mindfad ? Isn't there like a PG 13 + requirement to join up here or something ?

I just read that whole speech. I can't believe anyone with half a brain cell would be taken by it. Was it particularly well delivered because on content I'd give it an F-!

I really wish he'd stop with the "girlie-man" thing. It might have been appropriate in the late 80s, when people would have actually gotten the SNL reference, but it just doesn't work now. The childish insults toward Democrats aren't productive either.

However, the actual content of the speech was pretty good. It would have driven the point home so much better if he hadn't felt the need to throw in the insults.

I agree with you Troll, I thought last night's convention was a disaster. First of all, you have some lame-duck protestor right in front of Cheney's box at the convention. A big for security on that bad boy.

Then you have Bush's daughters, who I happen to believe are both extremely attractive and could've lent a lot of credibility to how they've been raised yet "bimbo" and "teeni-bop" seems to be the angle of choice??? They had no business on stage. Not at all.

Laura Bush was fantastic. But then, maybe I'm just saying that because she's a hottie.

Arnold is Arnold. I'm not sure what I think of him. He's supposedly done much in California and is starting to change some West Coast minds regarding what conservative policy can actually do if allowed to fruition many believe. The whole "economic girlyman" platform is not necessarily a platform you can sink your teeth into however.

I'm sorry last night's convention was the publicized event. I'm hoping most caught night one of the convention. A far more moving event IMHO.

This whole 'First Lady' thing with their big hair and colorful clothes trying to look like some sort of latter day Jackie Kennedy is so weird. I'm sure they are built in factories somewhere in China.

And what is it with Presidents? Grey hair, side parting, clean shaven. Is there a factory that produces them too?

Funny, I still do not understand why some people hate America. You would think after we surgically removed Hitler’s boot from half of the world’s ass, and the Showa Empire’s boot from the other half of the world’s ass, and then removed Stalin’s boot from half of the world’s ass after we de-bootified the world before, people would at least, not hate us.

But, people forget too easily.

Laura Bush is fairly attractive. She's kept herself in shape compared to other first ladies. The reason most people become unattractive in older age is they get flubby and wrinkly.

You just don't like her because you're jealous that she gets it on with W.

Arnold gave an excellent speech last night, and of course the "other side" will say anything, including lie, inorder to make him look bad. Ain't gonna work. Bush is looking pretty damn strong at the moment, and frankly, the USA haters, Bush haters simply don't know how to reply to this.

Jerk. Just because I hate George Bush doesn't mean I hate America. I love America. This is a great country, and it can be even greater if we oust this self-serving asshole.

Hey genius, I already wrote in another thread that not all Bush haters are America haters. Some people fall into one of those categories, and some people fall under both.

No reason to get all defensive.

look people, arnold is an extremely talented, and strong willed person. i wouldn't say that he lied in his speech, but he seriously exaggerated and appealed to nothing more than the emotions (something that should be easy for him to do, thanks to his experience in the (action) film world).

the fact is, his message is weak. "i can do it, so anybody else can too." bla blah blah, errrr-NO! not everybody is the governator and not everybody has his talent or wants to look like him.

personally, i'm happy for him, and what he has achieved in his life is nothing short of stellar. but in the end, his is a very individual and unique story. hardly indicative of what most immigrants, and, dare i say, most americans experience on a daily basis.

nice show arnie, next...

So you'd rather have this?:

The information comes from Arnold's own mouth - he attempts to connect disconnected issues in order to form a convincing argument; he talks about no longer living under the fear of the Soviet boot whilst in fact, today, many live under the US boot; he relates his love of 'American' principles and values, apparently oblivious to American infringements on these values in other parts of the world; he attempts to paint the Republican party as holding the monopoly on ideals that in reality most people would aspire to - but usually disagree as to how to achieve them; he generally promotes the idea that a persons success and prosperity can be influenced by their country of residence - which I disagree with....

I dunno....the whole speech just seemed like a gross, hypocritical, simplification to me.

Not all Americans want to become bodybuilders or actors. Indeed, not everyone has talent in these things, and Arnold was not trying to say that they can or should.

What Arnold was trying to say is that anyone in the US can live a confortable life, if they so choose. It's a matter of finding something you're good at, developing your skills in it (something which sometimes, but not always, requires formal education or training), finding a way to get paid for it, and then -and this is the important part, but the one most people slip up on- not giving up until you've got it.

No, not everyone can be fabulously wealthy, but frankly that's irrelevant. Everyone can, however, be comfortable. It's all a matter of being willing to do what it takes, whatever that might mean for you. That is Arnold's point.

Do you mean 'can', or 'should'?

Of course a person's success or prosperity can be influenced by country of residence. As others have posted, it's hard to get a break in countries where barriers are set up to what a person can think, do, or earn. Somalia, to use PacHead's example, is an excellent example. The old Soviet Union was another example, back during its time. And let's not forget the great grandaddy of them all: feudal Europe (note that I said feudal, not modern).

Is is actually the country which does the influencing, though, or the system under which the country runs? It's really the system which matters. Traditionally, Republicans see the US as having a strong implementation of such a system, and they seem themselves as being guardians of this system against those who would harm it, intentionally or otherwise.

Up to now, I've only stated what is. The real question is, should all of this be the case? That is what I think you were trying to talk about, and if so, I'm up for debate. If not, then I apologize for the misunderstanding.
