Smoke a rock for me, Mr Barry!

I might talk a lot of crap about other countries, but there is no worse place on Earth than Washington DC.

If the residents of DC still have any hope of being viewed as rational, normal people - then they truly are insane.

Here's a reminder. Not so much the cause of DC's problems, but more of a symptom.

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,132406,00.html

"And I've given service to this community," Barry told the election night crowd.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and suggest Marion was talking about the community service hours to which he was sentenced.

Well, to be fair...Mayor Barry was the victim of a set-up. It was entrapment.

Wouldn't we all smoke crack if we saw it sitting there on the table? I mean, that's pretty much the same as somebody holding a gun to your head and making you smoke crack. Right? Geez, who could resist a crack rock that's just laying there on the table?

Think so? Oh well, I'm just too jaded, I suppose.

Yeah, D.C. is a hole and Barry is a joke.

I've been around a lot of drugs in my life and have only seen crack once.

But then again, I was never a crack head.

DC is, in many ways, a national embarrassment. If you stray too far away from the touristy areas, you can almost literally watch the city decay around you. Barry's continual re-election is not, I believe, so much a cause as a symptom of much deeper problems, problems of which this urban decay is also symptomatic.

Actually, that is quite untrue. The city has been undergoing pretty amazing change for the better since I first moved here in 1988. It used to be that anything further east than about 15th street was a no-go zone. The amount of new construction and renovation that has been spreading out toward Capitol Hill is amazing, as is the growth around U St, 15th Street, New York Avenue, and so on. It's still a mess in many ways, but it is a long way from the disaster it was in Barry's time. That's why I was happy to vote for Williams when I lived in DC.

I'm not happy to hear of Barry's, but the fact that one Ward of the city worships him shouldn't overshadow all the work that has gone into rebuilding the city over the last 15 or so years.

I'm starting to get close myself, I just realized.

Ahem. It's true that things are improving in some areas. I say that as a native of the area. However, there are also plenty of places which have shown little to no improvement at all. It's almost as though the sheer mass of politicians has infected the city itself with pure, raw corruption.

Clinically insane? Been there, done that, got the effing T-shirt. With extra long sleeves.

I can honestly say, though, that the few times I've been back to DC in the past few years it was MUCH cleaner than back in the old days. I can remember seeing the riot rubble as a child, and the fear in the streets from even the 1980s, and it ain't like that these days.
He can be fixed -- you can't.

I had a love/hate relationship with D.C.

Pros:
Good museums
Awesome pretzels
Decent Metro
Incredible monuments
Short drive from Prince William Country (You live close, right Simey)
Great food in Chinatown (especially this one Mongolian Grill there that has all the stuff in a circle around the wok. Nice place)
Best fireworks show ever, especially if you get down near the artillery for the 1812 overture.

Cons:
Pot holes
Pot heads
Sllooooooooooooooowwwwwwwww Traffic. Springfield Mixing Bowl is a nightmare. Once, I spent 30 minutes at a light about 1 minute ahead of the bowl. Nightmare.
Some really decrepit old building outside of the monuments and stuff.
Can get boring after awhile.
Did I mention bad traffic?

Haha at Barry

You mean Prince William County? I'm maybe about 10 miles north of the county line. But what's so special about Prince William? Occoquan and Manassas are pretty, but the rest is kind of blah -- unless you are very into Potomac Mills, I guess.

This sounds like the downstairs Mongolian Grill at Tony Cheng's.

I was in Georgetown for two weeks a few months ago. It was ok, but the sheer amount of homeless people wondering around was quite shocking. Not that I'm shocked by homeless people, but it was pathetic.

That's where by dad moved to for a business deal. It was kinda blah, I never liked the mall (9 sections! Too many!), but I lived about 2 miles away from Henderson elemntary. I think I was the yellow house on Edgehill Rd. Then we had to move to that little townhouse place across from the PDQ. I think we lived in Ardmore loop. Ours was one of the corner houses.

That's it! Tony Cheng's! I was thinkn Tony, but I didn't want to say that and look like an ass. Do they still give you those little bowls of ice cream?
Manassas is nice, never really went to Occoquan that much.
Miss the place for the memories, but rather be up in PA.
One thing that was odd when I went to see my friend down there (we lived like 4 houses from each other back in the day) was how much better the theater is, the AMC. Did a nice job remodeling it. But not much has changed.

I had lunch there maybe a month ago. I don't remember bowls of ice cream, but I was being pretty seriously wined and dined this summer by a couple of law firms. After a whole summer of eating in restaurants every day for lunch, it kind of blurs.

If you are back in the area any time I'll let you in on my personal favorite. It's called the Afghan Restaurant and it is on Route One opposite Potomac Yards. Really, really good, and dirt cheap.

I generally go down about every 6 months or so, probably back down around December 30.
Afghan? Anything in particular?
Know any good Mexican restaurants round there? Not chains though.
Hell, you could probably egg my old house. The people hwo moved in destroyed the grass. We put in alot of sod, and these people let it go yellow in two years. Ok, it's yellow, it's in between two really weird houses covered by trees, one with more shrubs and stuff on the right if you like right at it. I think it's…hold on…1526 Edgehill Dr. or something like that. Be warned though. In one of houses on the opposite side down a house, there's an enormous woman who lives there. Be warned.

That's good to know. Every time I drive by that place I am on my way to somewhere else
but it always looked appealing to me. There is also Kabul Caravan in Woodley Park right
by the Ellington Bridge. Very tasty Afghan food there, as well.

For Mexican, try El Paso Cafe on Glebe Road in Arlington. Plus, it's one of Dubya's favorite
places for Tex-Mex. You might get some Bush with your burrito.

Yeah' but what's the food like for the Afghan restaurant. Heavy, gut sticking, light, dry, salty, etc.
As far as the Mexican food, is it expensive, spicy (better be!). Anything you suggest?
Bush in my burrito…sweet! Skin bar and Mexican food!

Me too...

Pros:
- Low population density
- Water reeds make an attractive addition to reflecting pool
- The "Old Man" is kind of charming
- Jerry Goldsmith soundtrack
- No Carousel
- Nice statues

Cons:
- Hard to reach
- Gravestone inscriptions are somewhat difficult to read
- Too many vines growing all over everything
- Too many cats and mouldering books make me sneeze
- Francis 7 trying to kill me with a flagpole

I always thought that by leaving DC and coming out to school in Oregon I could truly put Marion Barry behind me forever. But once I got here they hit me with these:

No escape.
Have you seen me?
