They are claiming they were misled about the documents. To read Blathers statement, you also get the impression that no one is to BLAME.
I guess they will be changing the wording to be:
C-Clown
B -Broadcasting
S-Sh:+
The question is WHEN will Dan Blather be retired? I think after the Bush 2nd term starts.
After seeing REAL documents vs the CBS fakes I wonder what took them THAT long to figure they had been hoodwinked??

CBS was hoping the story would die on the vine.
They knew they were taking a risk, but figured the other networks were pro-Kerry and would play along nicely. Reckon they forgot about FOX.
Oh well, Dan Rather hasn't lost much credibility - mostly because he didn't have much to lose.

STATEMENT FROM DAN BATHER:
Last week, amid increasing questions about the authenticity of documents used in support of a 60 MINUTES WEDNESDAY story about President Bush's time in the Texas Air National Guard, CBS News vowed to re-examine the documents in question—and their source—vigorously. And we promised that we would let the American public know what this examination turned up, whatever the outcome.
Now, after extensive additional interviews, I no longer have the confidence in these documents that would allow us to continue vouching for them journalistically. I find we have been misled on the key question of how our source for the documents came into possession of these papers. That, combined with some of the questions that have been raised in public and in the press, leads me to a point where—if I knew then what I know now—I would not have gone ahead with the story as it was aired, and I certainly would not have used the documents in question.
But we did use the documents. We made a mistake in judgment, and for that I am sorry. ++It was an error that was made++, however, in good faith and in the spirit of trying to carry on a CBS News tradition of investigative reporting without fear or favoritism.
Please know that nothing is more important to us than people's trust in our ability and our commitment to report fairly and truthfully.

Looks like ole Dan will be going the way of Connie Chung.
seeBS "news" needs to give up the source so charges of libel and slander can be charged.
That would probably disqualify Kerry's bid for president though.

So, let me get this straight? CBS/Rather gets information that is presented to them, supposedly confirmed by others and then turns out it was false. And now they want to play the victim. But the Bush administration gets information regarding Iraq/WMD, which is cofirmed from several countries, and they're vilified? Got it.

They certainly are the fools for not confirming their sources. I'll tell you what though, this has Karl Rove written all over it. You wait and see.

What's more, Dan Rather has personally apologized, and taken at least some responsibility for the foul up. Bush, on the other hand, refuses to take responsibility for anything, and instead of admitting he was wrong, changed the justification.
It would be like Rather claiming that the documents are now justified by the goal of liberating the White House because he got bad intel on the quality of the documents.

Yep, Rather admitted it alright, after he was cornered and couldn't lie his way out of it anymore.

My point is that you have the left defending Rather seemingly wanting the documents to be true, despite evidence to the contrary. With the Iraq/WMD issue, several countries pointed to evidence that there were WMD. It wasn’t just Bush who said this. Clinton, Russian, UK, etc. Now, I’m not trying to say these 2 incidents are on the same level, but it does seem hypocritical to blame one side and not the other.

I think he knew they were fake, and he intentionally went along with the story.
They, c-BS, didn't even listen to their own "experts" who had doubts. They wanted these to be real.

There's no question that Rather is a leftie.
But, I admire him for apologizing.
I really do. It took some big boots to do so in such an earnest way.
Props to him!

I don't admire him for apologizing. He had no other choice I suppose. He was backed into a corner, and he was still foolishly defending their authenticity last week, even when there was a mountain of evidence growing. They even stubbornly refused to conduct an internal investigation, because they didn't care.

It seems to me that Rather was forced to admit it. The evidence shows that CBS/Rather ignored any evidence that showed the documents were forgeries. That is why it doesn't seem a big deal that he apologized. But I guess it's better that he did.
EDIT: Okay, he didn't apologize. Any credibility that he had is gone, in my opinion.

WHERE IS IT THAT HE APPOLGIZED??
HE is claiming that he was an innocent victim, and that (insert Kerry supporter here) duped the trusting yet stupid CBS and Blather. He claims no responsibility, and should be appologizing to the president for the smear.
Even MORE important is how good are CBS' "Experts" ?? Are they such 5th rate poor quality professionals that they didn't know right off that they were fake. The proportional fonts, the incorrect lingo, and the fact that the dates of the guy signing the documents had retired BEFORE the date on the document. What kind of other research has CBS done and should we question all other stories they did over the last 20 years? Passing off opinions as "NEWS" is standard procedure with CBS ???????

Not exactly sure bout that one. Maybe people equated the bogus documents to the story and withdrew criticism, but maybe not.
Of course people like anag0k want to believe, but nothing will stop them.

I haven't had a rough time at all. I'd talk about all the ways Bush has helped me and my family (taxes, jobs, business, etc.) but then I'd just get tagged as a show-boater or gloater or "Rich White American" as someone here called me once.

No, I can't tell the difference between WMD and guard service either. I find it more interesting that Bush supporters think Rather should be fired for relying on forged information, while they aren't concerned that Bush let forged information into his State of the Union speech. We went to war based on false information, and that is less important? Maybe three years from now, CBS will decide to start to update its procedures (just like the Bush administration has waited three years after 9/11 to even begin to reform our faulty intelligence system).
The reason Bush supporters most often give for supporting his actions in Iraq despite them being based on false evidence is that the war was a good thing anyway. I.e., despite lying to the world, Bush basically made the right decision, it turns out, so it is okay.
But CBS basically got the story right, even if the documents were false. So shouldn't it be okay?
(This is ridiculous conservative "logic," not my own. Myself, I don't think Bush or Rather should be let off the hook.)

The CBS story is about Bush. My post was about Bush in the context of the story about the CBS story, responding to Y3a. I don't see your problem, and don't appreciate your pseudo-moderation.
Now your post on the other hand is completely off topic. As is this one. As are the above posts by Zimphire, PacHead, and deedar. Y3a's post of course brought Clinton into it, but that's to be expected. Why don't you now moderate them all, and drive this thread even more off-topic?

Guilty as charged.
