Finance Minister Highlights Strength of Saudi Economy
During a speech at the annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Saudi Finance Minister H.E. Dr. Ibrahim Al-Assaf noted that the Saudi economy has continued its strong performance in 2004. Among the indicators the minister stressed were a decline in the inflation rate and an increase in surpluses in the country’s foreign account and general budget. He added that Saudi Arabia’s strong economy has allowed the private sector to play an important role in diversifying the economy.
During his speech on the Saudi and regional economy and the role of the IMF in the Gulf and Arab world, Dr. Al-Assaf also noted that Saudi Arabia is holding the final rounds of talks with the United States to reach an agreement on Saudi Arabia’s accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO), which could occur by the end of the year.
Dr. Al-Assaf also stressed the importance of cooperation and continuing dialogue between oil producers and oil consumers to maintain the stability of oil prices under the auspices of the Riyadh-based World Energy Forum.
