A new study shows that Germany is very bad in environmentalism:
http://www.yale.edu/esi/ESI2005_Main_Report.pdf#page=10
And this despite the fact that Germany has a social-democratic/ecological government.

6. Canada
15. Latvia
24. Albania
31. Germany
45. United States
66. United Kingdom
145. Taiwan

Canada is only 55 million in a country the size of America also.
But it's still very impressive.

This is not a population issue. If you look at the map you will see that this is latitude issue. Countries close to the equator are bad in environmentalism. Why is that? And why is Germany so bad despite its ecological government? Even Albania is better. That's unthinkable!
Taiwan is the second last country. If we buy cheap stuff from them (like iBooks and iMacs) are we buying them at the cost of the environment? Probably so.

You have to put that map into context. Large, sparsely populated countries with high biodiversity (like Brazil) are going to be more "sustainable" than Germany (which is very densely populated), even though their industries aren't up to the same "ecological" standards.
Conversely, arid countries are going to fare worse, not having swathes of forests, etc. to offset the population/industrial byproducts.

Germany is not so bad after all if you consider the fact that they had to pick up after communism in the East which destroyed the environment, there were places where entire forest were burned down by the poor quality of the air and water. They cannot accomplished miracles but Europe is very good when it comes to the environment because the governements actually cares. Like in the U.K. they cleaned up their act in London and you can actually see the sky now.

Something is bogus about this study.
You would think that Alaska would have a similar rating as Canada, but no, it has the same as the rest of the US.
It is almost political. I don't care what the policy of the rest of the US is, I believe that Alaska's enviornment is not much different than Canada.
