I wish people in this country would learn a lesson from the Iraqis, and for that matte the Afghans too. These people are quite literally willing to risk their lives for something they believe is important. We take far too much for granted.

wow..amazing..awesome.
would have never expected this from how the media was saying how the election would be a disaster with 20% voting etc.
amazing and proves once again that the media (other than FoxNews of course) is not to be trusted.

how do these pictures disprove 20% turnout, for instance? i'm glad to see at least some instances of happy, unmaimed people voting, but to conclude that all is peachy keen from a few people with purple index fingers is illogical.

I just read that there was about a 70% turnout ... that was way higher than expected. I'm happy for them.

today's events are historic for all people of the Middle East and wherever democracy & freedom is loved.
you go on and pout though, it shows your true colors.

spikey_dog is still right, unfortunately. We can't rely on that one election. But it is certainly a nice thing to see.
Let's hope this will keep on improving. The future is far from certain and challenges abound from inside and outside.
The most challenging part will be in exercising democracy once the U.S. coalition will be out. Remember that this country has known terribly bloody carnages throughout its history, and it's culture is still strongly clan-based outside of the main cities.

I was grinning uncontrollably at the countless stories on Google news about this. It's good day in Iraq and they've needed one for awhile. Hopefully we can ride the momentum of this election right out of that country.

I'm really happy for those who were able to vote. This is why I supported the overthrow. I remain dismayed by the administration's execution, but I applaud President Bush's willingness to take action.
Let's just hope this leads to better, rather than worse, days ahead.

An Iraqi girl carried her mother's voter registration papers in Sadr City, a neighborhood in Baghdad.

A voter's finger was marked, a measure to prevent fraud.

An Iraqi woman cast her vote in a classroom that was used as a polling station in Baghdad's Karada neighborhood.

The streets of Baghdad were full of children playing soccer.

No apology necessary. I was quite blind to that background. It is remarkably similar.

Hopefully better days are in store for Iraqis. They've known little but brutality and death for a few decades now. Ironically, these are the same Iraqi people that many have suggested we simply bomb into the stone age in our quest to root out the insurgency. The same people who are "inherently violent" because they are Muslim. These images should be a wake up call to both the pro-War and anti-War crowds.
To the anti-War crowd (myself included): Now that the old regime is toppled, shouldn't we have some optimism for the possibility that this could be the beginning of of better decades ahead for Iraq than they've known in a generation?
To the pro-War crowd: Does the humanity depicted in these photos not underscore the depth of the tragedy at Abu Ghraib, at Fallujah, and all over Iraq where people just like these have been snuffed out, maimed, or made homeless in droves (according the the Iraqi Ministry of Health .. "coalition" and Iraqi National Guard forces are responsible for nearly twice as many civilian casualties than the insurgency in the last 6 months of 2004 .. even as insurgent action spiked).
Meh... enough moralizing. Here's my photoshop

i know thats alot of pics to post and apologies to those on dial up but it has just been such a special day for all of humanity...
Yes I know some in here are making snide remarks but I also know that deep down they know that at least today we can all agree a step forward was made for the Iraqi people.... so this is for the Iraqi people, it was such an honor to watch the vote today.... you have given a gift by your vote today to everyone who cares about freedom and liberty all over the world.
Amazing day... this is one for the history books.

Why don't we do that purple finger thing in America? That way no one has to worry about multiple registration fraud and such.

Better still, why can't we learn from the Iraqis and hold our elections on a friggin' SUNDAY? More turnout, no?

Exactly. Let's do all we can to help their fledgling democracy get off the ground and then BRING OUR TROOPS HOME!

Iraq could very well devolve into a bloody orgy on par with Cambodia if we leave prematurely.
To paraphrase one injured soldier at Walter Reed, "If we don't stay the course, then it'll be my cousins and nephews who'll have to go back in ten years from now."

The base here in my city is uparmoring many of the 53,000 M113 armored vehicles that are to be given to the new Iraqi army and police to use to drive the insurgents out.
