That 20-round magazine in the "soldier's" weapon is a dead giveaway even if they did fall for it.

'It is our doll... to me it definitely looks like it is,' Liam Cusack of the toy manufacturer Dragon Models USA, inc., tells the ASSOCIATED PRESS. 'Everything the guy is wearing is exactly what comes with our figure...'

Captive U.S. Soldier Doll Rescued by Bush Doll
by Scott Ott

(2005-02-01) -- Just hours after Islamic militants in Iraq threatened to behead a kidnapped U.S. soldier doll, the camouflaged action figure was rescued in a daring nighttime operation by a toy George W. Bush action figure.

The nine-inch-tall replica of the president left Andrews Air Force Base in a scale model of Air Force One within minutes after the Pentagon learned of the kidnapping from a picture on an Islamic website.

The top-secret flight was reminiscent of the life-size president's Thanksgiving visit to Baghdad in 2003. During the long trip, the presidential doll was programmed to say intimidating things in Arabic, and reportedly spent several hours practicing his kung-fu grip.

Even as the mission was secretly under way, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-MA, went before the Senate to call for the immediate withdrawal of 12,000 military action figures from Iraq.

Upon hearing of the Bush doll's successful mission, Sen. John Kerry, D-MA, warned against "overhyping" the significance of the apparently heroic deed.

Not even close to a good fake. You could almost say it was designed to be ridiculed.

edit: Ah.
The message and photograph were posted on a site run by a group calling itself al-Muntada al-Ansar, which has in recent months restricted access to the site to registered users in an effort to avoid unknown groups posting messages.
Probably a Farker.

It was breaking news on CNN.
Wolf Blitzer - Feb 1, 2005

We're getting in very disturbing story coming into CNN right now. Let's go to the wires and check it out. Iraqi militants are now claiming in a website that they just posted to have kidnapped an American soldier, taken him hostage, and they're threatening to behead this American soldier in 72 hours unless the Americans start releasing Iraqi prisoners. This website shows a picture of this soldier, of the man allegedly an American soldier, his hands tied behind his back, a gun barrel pointed to his head, and this statement: "God willing, we will behead him if our female and male prisoners are not released from U.S. prisons within the maximum period of 72 hours from the time this statement has been released." That's the statement. We're monitoring this story. We'll check it out for you, get some more information when it becomes available. Once again, Iraq militants threatening to behead what they say is an American soldier within 72 hours unless the U.S. starts releasing prisoners.
And Guardian UK. And ABC News

Thse thug insurgents continue to play the leftist media like a finely-tuned fiddle.

A message is currently in circulation on Jihadist message boards in which an Iraqi by the nickname of “al-Iraqi4” admits to being behind the hoax of the US soldier’s capture by the Mujahideen [using a toy soldier that he named John Adam]. While some message board members prayed for the hoaxter’s guidance toward righteousness and resorted to God for judgment, others were furious at him for “demoralizing” the members.

Following is the translation of the hoaxter’s apology message, written on February 2, 2005:

In the name of God, the Most Merciful and Most Compassionate,

Soldier John Adam is [only] a toy.

I am a 20-year old Iraqi young man. I am unarmed, independent and do not belong to any party or group. I apologize to all the parties and everyone, for I meant nothing by that [no harm].

The picture was a scheme that I made up with a toy that I bought with $5.

Today I am announcing that this news was made up, and that the picture was of a toy that I worked on with the help of some children.

I cannot provide any information about me because, as I mentioned earlier, I am unarmed, and any information about me might jeopardize my life and the lives of my family [members].

My apologies to everyone.
Buying a GI Joe in Iraq with $5? Hmmm.
