Canada allowing seal hunts...so U.S. should boycott Canadian seafood?

I think this boycott is a good idea.

Why Canada allows seal hunting with clubs I do not know. It is barbaric and disgusting.

After that, Canada should look into banning snake eating and fire worshipping.

Actually, the American government allows it too in places.

On a related note, the American government finances native tribes to shoot whales with 50 caliber machine guns... should we also then ban all imports of American seafood into Canada?

If you want to boycott some seafood, boycott *Atlantic* salmon being raised in fish farms in the *Pacific*.

They are escaping and making there way to Alaska, bringing disease and unexpected new competition to the native species.

This is being done in British Columbia and Brazil. (mainly)

How about nations just get their noses out of what other nations do as long as they aren't threatening the population of said species?

If you don't like seal products don't buy them. It's simple. No need to hurt the rest of a countries economy because you think a certain animal is cute.

Done there. Been that.

Think guns, not clubs.

One cow, Cody; one cow. Our processes and controls are virtually identical in terms of our respective cattle and beef industries. The reasons for the ban on CDN beef are more political than scientific.

Ok, so let's boycott seafood so they'll have to kill EVEN MORE seals to make up for lost revenue!

Ok, note to Americans:

A portion of American seafood is snagged out of Canadian waters by American fisherman. They've been fighting for years on both coasts. So does that mean you should boycott US seafood too?

Another note: The seal hunt has been going on for many many years and I would not be surprised if there are American hunters up here too. On that note, there are 5 million seals up there. It is possible the hunt may just be more of a measure of population control since I don't know how resilient the food sources are up there in the frozen north. While I'm against the hunts myself, I still think any hunting should be done if whatever is hunted will be eaten by the hunter.

You mean "Note to Americans [who oppose the seal hunts]" don't you? Plenty of Americans wouldn't mind trying seal meat.

Myself, I'm not a hunter. But I'll taste just about anything once. Except sewer rat and dung beetle.

you must be extremely wise beyond my years ... because I have no idea what you're talking about.

How does boycotting Canadian seafood make a greater market for Canadian seal meat?

A boycott would drive prices up, not supply. The higher the price, the fewer the items sold. Thus fewer seals killed.

Hmmm... are you saying because no one is going to buy it the price would go up!?!

I would assume that if there was a boycott and no one was buying, then the price would go down due to a glut of inventory.

High demand = high price. Low supply = high price.
Low demand = low price. High supply = low price.

I was actually responding to what'shisname's post, but allow me to explain.. the market for clubbed seals would not be changed by a boycott, since it is illegal to sell them in the US anyways. As boycotted Canadian seafood becomes cheaper because of excess supply, the relative price of seal meat increases, as its real price remains unchanged. So, relative to the rest of the seafood market, seal meat seems more expensive. If this is the case, then fewer people will buy it.

You're welcome. I may be pretty liberal on most political issues, but I'm not the kind of person who automatically takes sides against America. Americans, or people of any country, are completely within their rights to boycott something they object to.

I'm not against it perse. But in this case i think i am because about 40% gets skinned alive, kinda painful i think. There is no check because the hunters are in quite a hurry to kill massive amounts in a short period of time. And is there something done with the meat or is it just the fur for the rich bitches?

But i agree that it's not much different then killing any other animal.

I didnt say anything about seal meat, now did I?

One of the reasons this seal hunt takes place is because of lost revenues within the fishing industry. Thus boycotting our seafood and making the 'farmers' lose more money from lost sales will just make them need to kill more seals to make up for this new form of lost revenue.

Making myself clearer now?

I like how you always attack my posts even when what I'm saying is true. Obsession?

Huh?!? You may think what you are saying here is true, but I don't see it that way. And when you use words like "always" you are making your comment false.

Very flatering. I almost named my cat after my nickname too, but my wife vetoed it and we named him Ed.

It's the last name of the lead singer of one of my favorite bands. Steve Kilbey sings lead vocals and plays bass guitar for the band the church. BIO

No, seal != seal meat; when nothing about my post mentioned nor had anything to do with the sale of seal meat. They sell their furs because of lost revenue, not their meat.

I wont even comment on your hate for me. Love muffin.
