New Orleans Cops Threaten Forced Evacuations

NEW ORLEANS — Using the unmistakable threat of force, police and soldiers went house to house Wednesday to try to coax the last 10,000 or so stubborn holdouts to leave storm-shattered New Orleans

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,168743,00.html

The U.S. Military says they will NOT be a part of this.

I say nay, why make people leave now? they have been thru hell, if they want to stay and protect their homes I say why not.

I think it is a horrible idea by the Mayor and he will quickly backtrack.

your thoughts?

Because people are starting to get sick and die because of the bacteriological stew swirling around their feet. Enough people have died in this debacle. No reason to add any more to the list. I really wish someone had thought of this idea weekend before last...

Forced evacuation is needed.

All the same, these people are a day late and dollar short.

Bacterial stew. Fires which can't be fought because usable water isn't commonly available and natural gas leaks and other fire hazards are a threat to anyone anywhere. The things people need will NOT be available to them during this time while the city is drained.

This should have been done last week.

Should have been done before the storm. But better late than never.

I don't know if you can force someone, but you can say, "this is the last bus, the last supplies, come with us now or fend for yourself." Then actually have buses ready to take folks, and places to take them to.

When the mayor declared mandatory evacuation, there should have been transport to support it.

I've read about a town in Virginia that, while they won't do forced evacuations in the face of a hurricane, if someone insists on riding out a storm when the town thinks its too dangerous to stay, they hand out Sharpies to all the people staying, and tell them to write their social security numbers on their bodies so that they can be identified later. Gets the point across rather bluntly.

Interesting conundrum.

As Americans we value our freedom, yet to protect them we need forced evacuation. I suppose my perspective is, if you want to stay fine. You'll need to fend for youself but if things get out of hand, we will not be back to "rescue" them. I like the sharpie/SSN statement.

I say this, though it would never happen: if they won't leave, deny them any help or assistance from the Federal Government.

Good look to ya!

Those who stay will be dead in 2-3 weeks anyway.

Yay, because it is for their own good. Diseases will spread rapidly, no drinkable water, electricity, etc. for probably months. They endanger themselves and others if they stay. Yes, many of them have been through hell, but the worst is still to come.

there are some areas that were never touched by the flooding. electricity has returned etc, and NOW they are comign in and saying get out... even though their house never flooded, they have electricity and their own supplies...they still are being told to leave by the Mayor.

Well, actually you can. Think back to the evacuation of the West Bank settlers.

(BTW, I think it was Bill Maher or Jon Stewart who showed a picture of a U-Haul truck with a superimposed graphic that read, "Jew-Haul," when doing a story of the West Bank withdrawals. And it wasn't meant as an anti-Semitic comment. Got a HUGE laugh.)

It seems this isn't the FIRST time you and I have watched the same tv show. Yes, last night's news. And it was SOUTH CAROLINA.

Actually, I don't watch the news. There was a town in Virginia that John Tierney mentioned in a NY Times Op-Ed. But I was afraid that if people knew I read the Times they'd think I was a Liberal or something.

I don't think it's a very original idea, though.

I think back to the old coot who refused to leave his home on the side of Mt. St. Helen leading up to it's explosion many years ago.

What a way to go!

I proudly watch and read EVERYTHING no matter what the orientation if I think it might be interesting or add to my knowledge or if it is funny.

I get all my news from the Internet because I find all the network and cable news shows incredibly inane. The only "News" show I watch on a daily basis is the Daily Show. At least they know they're inane.

What a way to go!

His name was Harry Truman and had a ton of cats. (I was 11 when the mountain erupted.)

I think the reason a lot of folks aren't leaving is because of their pets. If they told me I had to leave, and leave my kitties behind I'd tell them to go crazy

just came across the wires: they have dropped the idea of forced evictions from homes.
http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/09/11/kat...act/index.html
:
Police: No forced evacuations
New Orleans residents who have remained in their homes will not be forced to leave, police announced Sunday.
