http://www.cnn.com/2005/POLITICS/09/....ap/index.html

On September 1, three days after Katrina slammed into the Gulf Coast, Simon learned that Dr. David Kline, a neurosurgeon who operated on Gore's son, Albert, after a life-threatening auto accident in 1989, was trying to get in touch with Gore. Kline was stranded with patients at Charity Hospital in New Orleans.

"The situation was dire and becoming worse by the minute -- food and water running out, no power, 4 feet of water surrounding the hospital and ... corpses outside," Simon wrote.

Gore responded immediately, telephoning Kline and agreeing to underwrite the $50,000 each for the two flights, although Larry Flax, founder of California Pizza Kitchens, later pledged to pay for one of them.

"None of the airlines involved required a contract or any written guarantee of payment before sending their planes and volunteer crews," Simon wrote of the American Airlines flights. "One official said if Gore promised to pay, that was good enough for them."
Its amazing how fast one man can get past red tape, get flights and evac people right from New Orleans, yet FEMA, and the State govs couldn't. Not a bashing thread, I just thought it was good post show a case of some one going all out to help.

Cutting a check for 2 flights is much simpler than coordinating rescue and recovery efforts for a devastated area the size of the UK.

This story was discussed months ago when it happened. A solid effort by Gore, but don't try to compare chartering 2 flights with the massive effort undertaken by numerous branches of government. Any one of us could charter 2 flights in about 30 minutes, providing we had the cash.

I agree with spacefreak. This really isn't comparable to what happened with FEMA and the state government's horrible reponse to Katrina. A private rescue operation by Al Gore is different and deserves much praise, but we can't draw too many other conclusions about that.

Gore's son was cited for drunk driving on a military base 2 or 3 years ago.

Why does this myth continue to perpetuate? Because it sounds funny? Gore did *NOT* say that he invented the internet.

Mostly because it was funny when Gore said... "I took the initiative in creating the Internet."

Okay, I confess, I can't quote exactly what he said, but he did in fact create and sign an important bill which helped provide important legal basis for the internet.

* Did he write the bill?

** Huh? Are you saying he had presidential powers to make a bill into a law?

You're spreading as much FUD as you are accusing nath of. Good job hypocrite.

I guess this noble gesture makes up for the one of the years when Gore donated less than $400 while hold the office of Vice President. /SARCASM]

You are forever cursed.

Kudos to Gore. Funny how people attack him for doing a good turn.

If one man can do more as people here say why couldn't the one man in the oval office? Yeah, funny that.

Just out of curiosity, is Jimmy Carter on the **** list of you Republicans too? Particularly with his activities out of office?

Example:

Carter talks about his new book on the Daily Show
