Ashley Smith, the Atlanta woman who said in March she persuaded escaped killer Brian Nichols to surrender by reading to him from Christian best-seller The Purpose-Driven Life, finally admitted that she also gave Nichols a little crystal meth from her private stash.

And he only wanted pot.

Dude... totally wrong thread. Wheres that pic of the soldier-looking guy with a funny look on his face and it says "Holy Sh!t! Wrong Forum!" ? I think its time we got one that said "Holy Sh!t! Wrong Thread!"

As for this lady being a Christian and using meth.. well, you really cannot prove any sort of correlation. "One data point," right? You would have to show a consistent relationship between the number of Christians and the number of meth users over a fairly decent amount of time, with a substantial number of people, and over a fairly large area. Feel up to it? Know someone who does? Until then, let's not make outlandish generalizations.

nonono, I was just saying your post was in the wrong thred--the second paragraph is directed to the OP. I guess its a little presumptuous or preemptive.. But the feeling I got from this thread was that a correlation was being drawn between meth users and Christians.. I mean, why else mention both facts? Either the OP wants to make a logical correlation (which my post attempted to refute) or its just an attempt to bash Christianity, in which case I really don't care anymore..... I haven't interacted enough with the OP to assume that it was just a random attack on Christianity, so I assumed a logical approach was being taken, so a argued the logic of it... nuttin personal, nuttin personal!

I never heard that, what source are you referencing. I'm sure posting as imflammatory as that you'll post the CNN/MSNBC/Fox link.

Link to Atlanta Newspaper Interview with her.

Actually I started my first post referencing christians, but decided half way through that it wasn't about religion, it was about hypocrisy. I had just heard a radio headline about it, but now that I've read the interview I respect the woman for getting her life in order.

The chrsitian nuts were all over her she was there poster child....just more evidence of how naive, or blind this crowd is. If you say "Jesus" they'll show strong support you..without even considering anything else..like your actual values...just as they have with Bush.

She used meth. From this; what are her actual values? How can you know enough about a woman who happens to believe in Jesus, thwarted the attacker with Biblical references under intoxication that makes her a hypocrite? Was she telling someone not to use meth or something? Are Christians not allowed to have the same problems as humanity in general? I find it more than interesting that we place Christians on this pedestal. Perhaps some day you'll see the irony of your angle in respecting this Deity to overcome the ills of humanity. I'm just as willing to believe the Lord worked through all this. Attacker happens to be open to meth, enters home of Christian meth user and ends up where he belongs and she ends up getting off the stuff. It's a beautiful story of timing, coincidence, inspiration, salvation, and repentance. All of which comprise the stories of the New Testament quite succinctly.

The title of her book is "Unlikely Angel: The Untold Story of the Atlanta Hostage Hero", but the press seems to be saying she is the unlikely angel, but I bet if they/we/I were to read the book it would refer to Brian Nichols, the intruder.

As a Christian, woman isn't perfect. Just forgiven.

I recently heard on an NPR news show that when the incident occurred she had decided to turn her life around and is now currently drug free. I hope all of the stress and pressures of having her name dragged around and being torn apart don't cause her to slip back into a drug lifestyle.

I read it in The Week magazine. I'm sure it's easy to source to AP or some other news outlet.

Geez, everyone needs to relax a little bit, I'm not taking potshots at Jesus or Christians, just this woman.

Down boy, down. It's about the hypocrisy, not the Christianity. I could care less what her religion, values or world views are.

Actually, I don't think she's a hypocrite at all. The people who hyped this story were all over it for the wrong reasons, as it turns out - it was supposed to be an example of how merely reading from a Christian book saved this woman's life, when in reality it was the drugs mellowing the guy out that saved her life. Once the guy was that high, she probably could have read passages from Dr. Seuss and had the same outcome.

This doesn't mean there's anything wrong with Christianity, just that people shouldn't leap to conclusions about the supernatural Power Of The Word when there's a perfectly un-supernatural explanation at hand.

The point is not that there is anything wrong with Christianity, hey if it gives you comfort and solace and makes you a better person there's nothing wrong with whatever flavor religion you choose. But as has been pointed out some were quick to accept the notion that reading passages from a Christian book inspired this guy to turn himself in after killing two cops.
