I wish I had been the first one to introduce a new word to the MacNN community which spread to everyone here and is now in current use.

Incongruity is a good word. Disingenuous is another. And while they ALREADY existed in the language, they weren't much in use until SOMEONE introduced either one of them to the board.

I just ran across a word that I'd NEVER used before and one I think might enjoy great utility here.

Heterodox. No, it doesn't refer to heterosexual physicians.

http://www.yourdictionary.com/ahd/pron/H0174800.wav

(Pronunciation Key)
het·er·o·dox Listen: [ htr--dks ]
adj.

Not in agreement with accepted beliefs, especially in church doctrine or dogma.

Holding unorthodox opinions.
Used in context here's a passage:

Sunni Islam is a very big tent, and there always have been insiders and outsiders within Sunnism playing out their rivalries with clashing philosophies.4 Throughout the past century, the most important of these clashes have occurred between Sunni reformers and the traditional Sunni clerical establishment. The ideology espoused today by al Qaeda and similar groups can be traced directly from the 19th-century founders of modernist reform in Sunnism. Al Qaeda's leading thinkers are steeped in these reformers' long struggle against the establishment. The teaching of the reformers has been heterodox and revolutionary from the beginning; that is, the reformers and their intellectual descendants in al Qaeda are the outsiders of today's Sunni world.
And here is the IMPORTANT CRITERION: I did a MacNN search and it comes back with NO HITS.

So, I can be sure that I will be THE one who introduced the word to MacNN.

Let's see if it spreads.

For those of you who enjoy word fun, this might be a nice little game, eh? (Oisin! lol)

EDIT: Dagnabbit! I meant to post this in the regular lounge. Please, give a brother a hand, Mr. Mod! Thanks.

This is the 23rd instance of someone using the word, "dagnabbit." I was ALSO the 22nd user.

This just might become an obsessive/compulsive's delight!

specious

1. Having the ring of truth or plausibility but actually fallacious: a specious argument.
2. Deceptively attractive.

Sorry, but there were 106 instances of the word, "specious" being used here at MacNN before you just did. Your claim is specious. Please try again.

Mensa's New Words for 2005 (humor)

The Washington Post's Mensa Invitational once again asked readers to take any word from the dictionary, alter it by adding, subtracting, or changing of one letter, and supply a new definition.

Here are the 2005 winners:

1. Cashtration (n.): The act of buying a house, which renders the subject financially impotent for an indefinite period.

2. Ignoranus: A person who's both stupid and an a**hole.

3. Intaxication: Euphoria at getting a tax refund, which lasts until you realize it was your money to start with.

4. Reintarnation: Coming back to life as a hillbilly.

5. Bozone (n.): The substance surrounding stupid people that stops bright ideas from penetrating. The bozone layer, unfortunately, shows little sign of breaking down in the near future.

6. Foreploy: Any misrepresentation about yourself for the purpose of getting laid.

7. Giraffiti: Vandalism spray-painted very, very high.

8. Sarchasm: The gulf between the author of sarcastic wit and the person who doesn't get it.

9. Inoculatte: To take coffee intravenously when you are running late.

10. Hipatitis: Terminal coolness.

11. Osteopornosis: A degenerate disease. (This one got extra credit.)

12. Karmageddon: It's like, when everybody is sending off all these really bad vibes, right? And then, like, the Earth explodes and it's like, a serious bummer.

13. Decafalon (n.): The grueling event of getting through the day consuming only things that are good for you.

14. Glibido: All talk and no action.

15. Dopeler effect: The tendency of stupid ideas to seem smarter when they come at you rapidly.

16. Arachnoleptic fit (n.): The frantic dance performed just after you've accidentally walked through a spider web.

17. Beelzebug (n.): Satan in the form of a mosquito, that gets into your bedroom at three in the morning and cannot be cast out.

18. Caterpallor (n.): The color you turn after finding half a worm in the fruit you're eating.

thanks. i'm not an idiot, though. while i have os x, i don't have the standalone distribution of darwin, which i do not believes contains loginwindow.app, seeing as how darwin does not utilize the login window, or aqua for that matter. one question, to those who do have darwin standalone -- is there anything in darwin not included yet in os x (except the dev tools) ? Or do all x users have exactly the same thing, as far as the BSD subsystem goes, as darwin 1.2.1 users?

i also second the fact that the string seen is in face included on every distribution of the PB. i agree that it does sound like yellowbox detritus. good god, though, i sure hope they port the yellowbox api to windows, so that coca and objective-c get seriously used. think about how nice that would be -- a developer could use the language and api in the course of codinag a windows app, and, poof, free mac port. i think we would see a lot more mac versions of previously windows-only software if apple would make this move. anyone have any thoughts on why they haven't/won't/backed down on the promise?
...but you are also forgetful. YOU actually used it before this thread! Unless you are saying that when you used it BEFORE, it was the first time ever in this forum. (Which it isn't.)

If you guys can't check your own word in MacNN's "search" then it's not fun. I'll just find a big commonly used word and claim it and someone else has to call me on it.

Ok. Well I hereby challenge EVERYBODY's word unless they show proof with their claim.

We'll wait and see if it achieves common useage.

Thanks, Railroader. But I want the people submitting the claim to do so WITH the proof unless you or i will become the fact checker. Nah.

But, wait a minute, maybe we could just wait until AFTER the word (if it does) reaches the point of common useage. And THEN check. As long as MacNN's servers permit searches as they now do, we will always be able to verify claims of authorship.

Ok, Railroader. Thanks for the assist in trying to establish linguistic standards we all can trust and believe. And thanks for helping me see that submissions with proof are not necessary.

antediluvian or its common misspelling, antedeluvian.

Never been used in the Lounge until now . . . by me.

Hahahaha!

I went searching for something that I could reward you with. But time and again I came up with nothing and then it hit me.

http://www.nasm.si.edu/exhibitions/StarWars/guide.htm

The opposite of antediluvian would be futuristic. Here's ^ the PERFECT prize. But let THIS be the only prize I shall reward to any of you and all of you because, like Space Pioneering, WORD PIONEERING is it's OWN reward!

I'm still there, or here, actually. I'm at the newish American Indian museum,
right next door to the Air & Space Museum. In fact, our staff breakroom looks
out onto NASM.

Thanks for the present.

PS: Here is an extra word for you, Mojo2. It is "antipode".
Used only once and first posted by Cpt. Kangarooski here in a

Let's have Capt. K claim it. I haven't checked it so I can only take you at face value that the word is qualified to claim. You didn't say you checked it, so...

I love this revolving identities thing.

Anyone can become ANYONE or NO ONE in a moment. Or can they?

I have been flattered by comparisons, not only to the esteemed aberdeenwriter but to Zimphire and a couple others I fail to recall because I don't keep track of such things and I was probably intensely focused on more important matters such as how to bring peace to the M.E. (pokes stick at self ).

But there are a NUMBER of identities here which take on different characteristics and some of them I will like on and not the other. I won't specify. Then there are those who seem to slip in and out of identities, logging in as one person to say ABC and logging off and assuming the alter ego to say something else entirely. And, there are cases where I will like one and not the other.

Ahh, I just remembered a comment by ILIKEBEER. He suspected my being a group of people in a room and we are all hyper-uber right wing think tankers or something. It's funny that someone whose name might lead you to believe him a drunk has such perception.

Glad you like the present! And thanx for antipode!

I think people are being obsequious to a few folks with large and varied vocabularies. They see through it-you just want hints for other large words to drop. I'm on to you!
