I hope this is finally close to becoming a reality. It's ridiculous to have to get a prescription for something that should be as available as a condom. The only thing is the age restriction, you have to be over 18 to get it without the prescription. I guess women under 18 still can have a forced pregnancy if their parents want them to.
Here is a link to the story--

ZOIMG WHZAT ABOUT WOMANS' RIGHTS U RACIST!?!
EDIT: Hey, MacNN ****ed up my all caps. Incidentally, in all seriousness, I think this is a good move. I knew a girl who needed the pill once and couldn't find any doctors nearby who were open till the weekend was over.

If you're hoping to send conservatives into orbit over this, I for one refuse. Abortion threads stir up negative feelings all around, and rarely seem to change anyone's mind.
Bottom line: if you have a Judeo-Christian view of morality, abortion is horrid. If you're an atheist/agnostic, then abortion should be an easily accessible thing with no moral repercussions.
Let's just leave it alone.

Just for clarification, the Morning-After Pill is not the same as the abortion pill. Different deals. The Morning-After Pill is meant to prevent conception. (Don't recall if you were involved in any of the previous flame wars where we covered that.)

And better still, this isn't an abortion pill. That won't stop some from being against it, because their positions have nothing to do with "saving babies."

Talks about abortion have been going on forever I know but the discussion doesn't need to focus just on abortion(even though that's the obvious compenent) -- but the new availability of this pill. So far, its only available by perscription. If it becomes more widely available, I'm just wondering what effect that might have.
At any rate, in accordance with the rules I couldn't just post a story and run but state a direction as well.

Says who? That is my sole reason for my position. If this indeed prevents conception than so be it (Then it's just another form of oral contraceptive i.e. hormone therapy?). The minute they start giving them away free to 8th graders w/out parental consent I'll be screaming, though.

I can totally understand not giving out a medication, but do you also have a problem with condoms being handed out?
Also it should be noted that this is not the same as RU487 (the "abortion pill") this causes 1) the egg not to drop from the ovaries and 2) not to attach to the womb, so in theory the egg could be fertilized (as this pill is effective for up to 3 days) and just not able to attach to the womb. This could still constitute an abortion in some sense, the egg could be fertilized yet not able to attach. so anyone who says life begins at conception could possibly be against this too.

That's exactly what it is. It's a dose of contraceptive hormones strong enough to prevent pregnancy even when it would normally occur.

So it's basically a months worth of birth control pills in one shot? (asking seriously)

so, what's to stop someone from just taking 3 of their normal birth control pills instead of buying the morning after pill?

I thought it was more than three times the normal dose but less than 30. Not a pharmacist or anything, though. The general idea is the same either way.
And it probably includes some balancing hormones to make up for the crazy cocktail.

Nothing I guess. But you can't get birth control pills over the counter. Plus if you already had the pills odds are you wouldn't have the need for the morning after pill.

I'd like to know who the critics are that call this abortion. I'd also like to see the evidence of this satement:
...if a woman is already pregnant the pills have no effect.
Just how pregant do you have to be before it doesn't work?

Regular birth control pills don't distribute the same dosage of [whatever the hell is in them] in every pill. They are weaker and stronger depending on a woman's fertility cycle or something. Some of the pills are actually just placebo tablets with nothing in them, just to keep the routine up.
All I know is, when she is on the strongest pills, the sex is the best.

I believe part of the issue is in the definition of the term 'abortion.' This pill might work by preventing implantation, and implantation occurs after fertilization. But it's not technically considered a pregnancy - and not an abortion - until after implantation. From what I gather, no one knows whether it works by preventing fertilization or implantation, and it most likely works both ways.
But if you think the fertilized eggs in test tubes used for stem cells are babies that are being murdered, you're certainly going to think this is wrong too.

The thing about abortion is that we have no divinitive proof or idea of when "life" begins, whatever the hell that is. So therein lies the conflict. Do we err on the side of it being a life, or it not being a life? It's a moral issue really. Personally I would rather not take the chance of being wrong about whether a fetus was alive.
And until we do know, government has not purpose in it's regulation, since that regulation almost always stems from religious ideology, which has no place in our government.

Conversely, if you can just take 3 afterwards, you have no need to take them every day beforehand (if you don't have sex regularly)

To kids? Yes, but we'd probably need another thread for that. Actually if I searched there have probably been about 20-30 already.

Bad, bad, bad.
HIV will be happy, since this will encourage the more "flirty" females to perhaps forget about barrier protection.

Both the pill and condoms can give a false sense of security. We had our second while my wife was on BC.

I know what you're saying, but I really don't see this pill being used in your situation. Your Mrs ain't gonna be downing a couple of days worth of hormones every time you both feel the need.
Let's face it, this technology was invented with one-night-stands in mind.

That's true, but the effective rate of this pill is less than my wifes BC pills...

Not necessarily one-night stands, but times when you're not using your best judgment, yeah.

Or...when the condom breaks?
My significant other picked up some a few months ago when this happened. Pregnancy didn't seem likely, but it was just to be safe. She tried the pill but ended up getting cysts and whatnot....

The fertilized egg must implant.

Some do, some don't.
Other interesting facts:
Pregnant mare piss is a primary ingredient of BCPs. I think it's where they get the estrogen from.
You can skip your period for at least a few months at a time by just starting up another three week course at the end of the last one (my GF does this).

Love it men talking about women's stuff. You are not the one who will have to deal with the consequences; so let us decide when and if we want to use any type of contraception. As previously stated the conservatives do not want to take up any reposabilities. So, give us more choices not less.

Well, if what's been said in this thread is true, it could be possible that the three pills taken are the placebo pills, which would effectively do nothing.

Men don't have to pay child support? There's more to 'consequences' than just having the baby. I'm not saying they're equal, but don't pretend like the man can have an illegitimate child and continue living all fancy-free.
