Can someone give me a brief explanation of how confession works in Catholic theology, please?

Does confession give Catholics a "get-out-of-jail-free" card? For example, if a Catholic steals a car or rapes a woman or murders a child, will a sincere confession completely absolve them of the sin and grant them entrance to heaven when the time comes? If not, then what is the purpose of confession?

Well, there's usually penance involved. It can get pretty harsh and almost always involves turning yourself in to the proper authorities (if what you've done is also a criminal matter).
