THE Government is discussing with airport operators plans to introduce a screening system that allows security staff to focus on those passengers who pose the greatest risk.

The passenger-profiling technique involves selecting people who are behaving suspiciously, have an unusual travel pattern or, most controversially, have a certain ethnic or religious background.

The system would be much more sophisticated than simply picking out young men of Asian appearance. But it would cause outrage in the Muslim community because its members would be far more likely to be selected for extra checks.

Unfortunately this may be necessary. But could the same thing be implemented in the US, where there is a written constitution which makes things like racial profiling strictly illegal?

Roughly translated:

"You're all going to have ID cards detailing your religion (and shoe size). And you're going to like it. Suckers."

(how else are they gonna be able to check a person's religious background?)

You watch. The bunch of goons running this place are so transparent.

They should just force Muslims to wear armbands with green crescents on them.

We could save time and get the design specs from the yellow armbands the Saudis make their Jews wear.

Do you mean in the similar way the Saudis saved time by learning from what the Nazis did in occupied Europe?

(Oh dear eklipse, your comment kind of backfired, didn't it?)

it is a small number of people doing this stuff - bear in mind they kill people in muslim countries as well. Just look at Iraq, most of the victims are themselves muslim.

It's not all Muslims versus 'us'.

It makes sense to pay extra attention to where an attack might come from - but also to keep in mind the events of July 22 2005 - just because someone looks the part, doesn't mean they are, and vice versa.

Why's everyone so blind-sided by "looks"? We know that one of the suspects of this recent plot is a white boy, so they can't profile on looks (something which everyone, including the MCB, seems to be missing).

So, given that, how are they going to know who's a muslim and should be profiled? I can only conclude that it's via ID cards. Which might explain the Hollywoodisation of last week's events.

Heck, I trust this government so much that I'm not even sure that last week's events weren't completely stage-managed by Prezzer (he's had the time lately) specifically to breed fear and an acceptance of civil liberties removal.

The question is, how to you get Muslims to register their religion with requiring everyone to register their religion? How do you ensure the potential terrorists are honest about the religion they registered?

apparently 2 shags didn't know about it till 7.30am... also his speech was rather uninspiring.

could well be via ID cards - that will stop terrorism in its tracks, doh!

first line of defence is intelligence, profiling at the airports is the last line. If they get as far as the airport then there has already been a massive security failure.
