I didn't know if any of you saw this: http://www.alternet.org/blogs/peek/40420
It's Dennis Leary in the announcers' booth during a Red Sox game. He starts going off upon hearing that The Sox's first basemen is Jewish.
I haven't seen this splashed like Gibson's episode.

I thought that was hilarious!
I didn't find it at all offensive, but then I'm not Mel Gibson or his father.

I don't know. Calling a baseball game and referring to a player as "the Jew" isn't offensive.
"It's a long fly ball to the Jap. Looks like both negroes will be tagging up."

The funny thing is that right as they were talking about the Jew playing first base, the Jew got a bunch of action... like 2 or 3 plays in a row.

It was a joke. Leary was lampooning anti-semites by behaving like one.
As an aside, though it's been a good 6 years since I've trawled usenet, when I was last there "Jap" (in reference to imported video games) seemed perfectly acceptable (to my shock).

That's interesting (Jap). When a friend of mine was in high school (1988-1991), he wote a report on WWII and often referred to the Japanese as "Japs", ala "meanwhile, the Jap forces in the pacific..." His dad was a WWII vet, and I guess that's what he was used to hearing. Anyways, after he turned in his paper... next thing he knows, his parents are called to the school while he's yanked out of class for a grand ol' intervention in the Principal's office.
As for Leary and Gibson, it appears that all Gibson has to do is claim that he is working on a comedy routine, right? That should get him off the hook. Maybe back it up with some audio of Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy, Leary, and a hal-milion others.

Yeah, that Denis Leary thing was really tacky, but I must admit, I laughed.
P.S. Around here, "Jap" often stands for "Jewish American Princess". It's almost an endearing term. Almost...
"Jap" for "Japanese" is definitely frowned upon though, just like "Chinaman" is for "Chinese".

Don't look at me, I told him to go with the donut routine. I'm pretty sure he finally took my advice with "sugar tits", but he forgot the line is "sugar glazed tits".

It wasn't even funny to me. Definitely didn't belong in a baseball game.
