"And the earth was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence." -Genesis 6:11

Who wants to tell the class what the Hebrew word for violence is (as seen in the passage above)?

"The natural progress of things is for liberty to yield and government to gain ground." TJ

The Hebrew word for violence—alimut—shares a common root with elem, “muteness.”

I'm talking about the word for violence in the above quoted passage.

Okay, I'll answer my own question: The word for violence in Genesis 6:11 is, transliterated, "hamas."

Maybe they meant "Hummus". An earth filled with Hummus would definitelty be corrupting. (And yummy!)

You put coincidence in quotes, as if it's not really a coincidence. Is it a prophecy?

These are references to "Tohu-Bohu", which roughly translated means "Chaos" and "Desolation". As in Genesis 1:2 which reads, "the Earth was 'without form' and 'void'".

No, I'm not saying it's a prophecy, but at the same time I cannot honestly say it's a coincidence, either.

The world will be filled with Hhamas? That's hard/impossible to believe. Doesn't even make sense.

I'm sure plenty of Nostradamus predictions could be interpreted to fit current events as well.

*edit* I am not sure what you are meaning by coincidence but before you post something like that post the entire context of the Bible.

Genesis 6:9-22 is talking about God warning Noah of the flood.

heres the whole 6:9-13
6:9
This is the history of Noah and his family. Noah was a righteous man, the only blameless man living on earth at the time. He consistently followed God's will and enjoyed a close relationship with him.
6:10
Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
6:11
Now the earth had become corrupt in God's sight, and it was filled with violence.
6:12
God observed all this corruption in the world, and he saw violence and depravity everywhere.
6:13
So God said to Noah, "I have decided to destroy all living creatures, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. Yes, I will wipe them all from the face of the earth!

What I meant was, while I realize it's not a prophecy, I don't think it's merely coincidental that the Hebrew term in that passage for violence happens to be hamas.

Hamas is an acronym of the Arabic phrase حركة المقاومة الاسلامية, or Harakat al-Muqawama al-Islamiyya or "Islamic Resistance Movement". The word formed by the acronym corresponds to an Arabic word meaning "enthusiasm".

The name has bad connotations to Jews and Israelis, because in Hebrew Hamas sounds exactly like the old word חמס, meaning "violence, injustice, harsh wrong" (Oxford University Press Hebrew-English dictionary). This word is quite common in the Hebrew Bible, such as in Genesis 6:11, "...the earth was filled with violence" ("ותמלא הארץ חמס…").

A coincidence, but not a strong one.

Jamás means 'never' in Spanish. Talk about a coincidence... or even prophecy.

Hammas is a poorly pronounced version of hammer. Talk about a coincidence.

Actually, Hamas translates roughly into English to the word "Pajamas". When you say pajamas in Spanish, it sounds just like pahamas. Drop the pa and what do you get? Hamas. What does this all mean? Hamas is going to kill us all in our pajamas. While we sleep.

And the "PA" part of "pajamas" obviously stands for "Palestinian Authority". Oh, those cunning dogs!

"Hamas" sounds suspiciously like "hamac".

But don't quote me on this: it's just a rumor.
