Do you have a link to the whole "speech" he gave? Because from that quote he could just as well mean that if the US (and the Christian World) don't stop attacking the ME etc then they will "suffer the consequences in this world and the next".

Yes, that makes sense, according to Al-Qaeeda and most islamistic ideologies at some time in the future God will punish the secular states and people in this life and in the next.

What Al-Qaeeda and most islamists want to prevent is that the islamic societies become secular, too, and therefore according to them equally losing their salvation and be punished for it in this life and definitely in the next.

The islamists have spotted european colonialism as spreading secularism in the islamic world and after european colonialism vanished, the Soviet-Union tried it according to them, and after the Soviet-Union vanished, the US is according to them the last threat trying to spread secularism.

Secularism means to them the forgetting of God, his laws and orders, and the afterlife..., and instead focusing all efforts and spirits on this life in order to get the best out of it financially and otherwise, ie. seeking heaven/paradise now... and not after death.

They see the breaking of family-bonds, the criminal-rate, the moral decline, the overemphasise of the individual at the cost of the community and the following egoism and egocentrism as proof for the evil of secularism, and want to start a revolution to roll that evil back from the islamic world before it is completely transformed like the west already is.

It's important to understand the logic and ideology behind Al-Qaeeda and most islamists, which at the same time also helps to understand the conflict known as War on Terror, which should really be defined as "Secularism vs. political religion"-conflict.

That doesn't surprise me at all, Iran's president is also an islamist although a shia-islamist and therefore an enemy of sunni-islamists like Al-Qaeeda, but on the ideology-ground they share the same view that secularism is an evil with which the devil tries to bring humanity to forget God, judgment day and afterlife, categorized by them on nearly the same level as polytheism.

I just find it peculiar that at the beginning of the 21st century, we, essentially, have two factions heavily opposed to liberalism and the achievements of the enlightenment, yet both of them insist that their "main goals" are to convert 95% of the people (I assume here that most non-radical muslims are in favor of religious freedom) on the planet to their respective beliefsystem, and that they are fighting a "just war".

I wonder if Al-Qaeda and other Islamic fundamentalists are currently aware of the culture wars going on in the West, and if their long-term strategy doesn't in some way involve the "harnessing" of these anti-secular sentiments.

OTOH, wouldn't a war on terrorism be much more effective if one tried to actually strengthen and expand on humanist and liberal philosophies in the east and the west? Or, in other words, - why are fundamentalists all over the world gaining success in their relentless war on the majority of humans?
