The UNITED NATIONS ADDRESSES 9/19/06: USA & IRAN
United Nations Gets Ready for President Bush
It's global leader week in the city, and many who work, live and travel through East Midtown know that as intense security and more traffic are evident (plea from the Mayor: "Take mass transit"), especially as the President will address the United Nations today. Yesterday, President George Bush and First Lady Laura attended a confernce on global literacy sponsored by the White House at the New York Public Library, but the bigger question was whether or not the President would come face to face with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Since Bush refuses to discuss Iran's nuclear program at the United Nations until Iran suspends uranium enrichment (though French President Jacques Chirac suggested that Iran doesn't necessarily need to suspend its program yesterday), people were atwitter at the possibility of a run-in.
However, given the U.S.-Iran tensions, the NY Sun urges for Bush to take some action with Ahmadinejad, flat-out suggesting Bush should get Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly or District Attorney Robert Morgenthau to arrest Ahmadinejad! The Daily News is just as upset about having the Iranian leader in the city (" it's the price we pay for being the site city of the, you should pardon the expression, world peacemaking body"), it leaves things at telling him, " Welcome to New York, you medieval goon."
Starting this morning at 9AM, protesters will be marching to the United Nations to protest the war (details from United for Peace and Justice here). Also today: An editorial in the NY Times asks President Bush to "take the lead" on stopping the genocide in Darfur when he addresses the U.N.'s General Assembly. And starting tomorrow is the Clinton Global Initiative. The First Lady is a featured speaker at the event, and President Bush may attend. Did you see former President Clinton on The Daily Show last night? While it's hardly a hardball show, Clinton was magnetic as he discussed his new post-White House work. We'll have to wait for clips to go up on YouTube.

Hide and Not Seek: Bush and Iranian President at the U.N.
Two Leaders Trying to Avoid Each Other at a U.N. Gathering Would Not Be a First for a U.S President
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad addresses the United Nations (UN) General Assembly on September 14, 2005 in New York City. The 60th session of the UN General Assembly got underway in New York as more than 170 leaders attend the diplomatic conference. (Daniel Berehulak/Getty Images)
Talk Politics: Join the Debate
By JOHN COCHRAN
Sept. 19, 2006— Don't look for a breakthrough at the United Nations General Assembly this week in the frosty relations between President Bush and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
The annual conclave of world leaders offers the opportunity for talks both in one-on-one meetings and at informal get-togethers, such as the reception Bush is hosting for leaders Tuesday night at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. But the Iranian president's invitation to the latter must have gotten lost in the mail.
Bush will deliver his speech, and at some other time, Ahmadinejad will speak. This is not going to be a U.N. version of "Crossfire" (CNN's former hotwired debate show).
White House Spokesman Tony Snow also ruled out any informal chats during social events at the U.N. "There is not going to be a steel-cage, grudge match between Bush and Ahmadinejad," Snow said.
The White House Advance Office, which plans presidential travels, tries to make sure there are no accidental meetings, but a Bush spokesman said there's always a possibility they will wind up in the same room.
Other presidents have also relied on their aides to try to avoid embarrassing confrontations with leaders they would rather not bump up against. But accidents do happen.
Bill Clinton did not want to talk to Cuba's Fidel Castro at the U.N. General Assembly in 2000. They found themselves in a crowded room at a diplomatic lunch, and Castro stuck out his hand. Clinton shook it. The first and only time any American president had physically touched Castro.
When reporters asked if they shook hands, Clinton Press Secretary Joe Lockhart first said no, then a short time later said yes. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright said they not only shook hands but also talked for "a couple of minutes." She said, "It was a chance encounter that Mr. Castro initiated. It was just a cordial conversation, but no substance as I understand it."
Bush vowed he would never shake hands with the late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat. They, too, ended up in close proximity at the United Nations. There was, however, no "grip and grin." It was widely reported that Bush had snubbed Arafat.

SEE THE ABC NEWS STORY ABOVE.
What could they say that has not been said?
Ahmadinejad won't attend any of the events where alcohol is served. Bush will. No meetings.

I think your attitude is disgusting. Make your smart ass comments about the Islamics if you want to be mister show bizness. No, you know they don't put up with crap like that. So why make your dumb comments about the President? Because you think nobody will say anything. Well, criticize Ahmadinejad and Osama and Zawahiri and that bunch if you are so cool.

Somehow I have the feeling you didn't even get the joke. Wouldn't surprise me though, given your limited mental capacity (and the fact that you're a complete and total lame-ass)

Tell it to Rush and the dittoheads... they did plenty of it during the Clinton years. Heck, they still do.

I understood it but it wasn't funny, hence, not a joke. Put some thought into next time. Be a little bit more creative then maybe you'd have something to chuckle at.

5 weeks ago, Ahmadinejad sure had something to say about U.S. healthcare on 60 Minutes. Remember this gem... ?
Ahmadinejad on Bush: "I am very saddened to hear that 1 percent of the total population is in prison. And 45 million people don't have a health care cover. That is very sad to hear."

Err, yes, it was funny (I can't even believe I have to post something like this).
And taking a jab at me because I have a differing political opinion just shows what a retarded, humor-impaired twit you actually are.

No, it wasn't funny. (I can't believe you're posting trying to back up your attempt at humor...oh wait, yes I can )
I could care less what your political inclinations are, so why would I take a jab? Does anyone other than yourself still use the term "twit"?

Okay, since the joke is dead (and I don't care anymore), and just to show everybody what an insuffrable asshole you are, - why do think this wasn't funny (and no, simply saying it "wasn't" doesn't cut it)?
It might not have been the world's best joke ever, and I have NEVER in my life had to "back up" my "attempt at" humor - but what you are doing here has reached such a level of assholeishness, that I feel I have no other choice than to at least point out your lameness.

Yes, why did you even comment?
Well obviously you do care about the humor of the "joke".
But I'm glad I've ruffled your feathers a bit. I'm glad I got your attention. The reason I commented at all was because of your non-deserved personal attack upon myself in the thread http://forums.macnn.com/95/political...eds-command/5/
Geez dude...I never "personally attacked" you once in that thread...but I find myself being called a moron (and worse) by you...shall I quote???
Except for people like yourself, zimpo, marden, idjeff etc. and, unfortunately, quite a few other morons, who are our own version of the Taliban.
Congratulations for being the scorn of western society. You people are what makes America so much less than it could be.
We all have our differing opinions Kronos. I may think you're a moron as well, but I'm not going to call you a moron here in the forum...it's just tacky and stinks of "assholeishness."
Peace?

No problem.
Next time, instead of attacking a completely unrelated post, just call me an asshole or a moron if that's what you think I am,
I have no problem with people expressing their opinion (even if that is an insult), - as long as they stay "on topic". No reason to get "personal" on an interweb forum (rest assured, what I wrote in that thread wasn't an attack on you personally - just a comment on what you (and others) have posted here at MacNN)

heh. You have a huge problem with people expressing their opinions. In fact, I don't think there is anybody that handles it in a worse way.

And, as usual, you're wrong.
But you would need to qualify that statement in order to not look like somebody who just personally attacked me with a completely baseless accusation in order to make your point.
