Shooting reported at Pa. Amish school
Posted 10/2/2006 12:22 PM ET
NICKEL MINES, Pa. (AP) — Police surrounded a one-room Amish schoolhouse Monday in response to reports of multiple shooting victims, a television station reported.
WGAL-TV said the incident occurred in southeastern Lancaster County.
About three dozen Amish people were standing behind a police line, and at least two ambulances had left the scene, the station said. Television news helicopters showed a person being taken away on a stretcher to a waiting medical helicopter.
The Lancaster County 911 website reported that dozens of emergency units were dispatched to a "medical emergency" at 10:45 a.m. Monday.

Report: 2 Las Vegas Schools In Lockdown
CBS News Interactive: School Shootings
(AP) LAS VEGAS Two schools were locked down Monday while police searched for a teenager who had been spotted on a high school campus with a gun, authorities said.
No students were hurt, and police said there was no initial indication that the teenager, who they said was not a student, had threatened anyone with the weapon, said Sean Walker, a North Las Vegas police spokesman.
The teen ran from the school after being confronted by campus police as students were arriving at Mojave High School, Walker said.
A handgun was found behind a nearby church, and both the high school and nearby Elizondo Elementary School were locked down while police searched the surrounding neighborhoods for the teen, Walker said.
School districts across the country have been especially sensitive to threats after deadly shootings last week at schools in Wisconsin and Colorado.
On Friday, a school principal was gunned down in Cazenovia, Wis., and a 15-year-old student, described as upset over a reprimand, was charged with murder. Just two days earlier, an adult gunman held six girls hostage in a school at Bailey, Colo., before killing a 16-year-old girl and then himself.
On Sept. 21, three high school seniors in Green Bay, Wis., were charged with conspiracy to commit homicide for allegedly planning to attack a school with guns and bombs.

According to MSNBC unconfirmed eyewitness report, a person named "Roy" entered the school this morning and for some reason the parents of some of the kids called authorities who responded with some kind of 'negotiator' when shortly thereafter 10 shots were fired.

Police: Several Killed At Amish School In Pa.
Coroner Says At Least Six Are Dead
POSTED: 12:16 pm EDT October 2, 2006
UPDATED: 1:21 pm EDT October 2, 2006
Police say a "number" of people have been killed in a shooting at a one-room Amish schoolhouse in Lancaster County, Pa.
A county coroner said at least six people were killed in the shooting at the Wolf Rock School. Police said the situation is now under control. Earlier, there were reports of a hostage situation and multiple people shot at the one-room schoolhouse in eastern Lancaster County.
"There are a number of people dead. ... The exact number I do not know yet," state police Cpl. Ralph Striebig said. The person who fired the shots was among those killed, Striebig said.
The scene is near Paradise Township, Pa. Lancaster TV station WGAL reported that the school is marked off with police tape and there were at least 13 ambulances in the area. A helicopter was overhead and several firefighting companies were on the ground.
Witnesses said that a man named Roy entered the schoolhouse Monday morning and started making threats, WGAL reported. Some people in the Amish community learned about the situation and contacted police. Negotiations took place, but at some point, at least 10 shots were fired within the school, police said.
About three dozen Amish people were standing behind a police line, and at least two ambulances had left the scene, the station said. Television news helicopters showed a person being taken away on a stretcher to a waiting medical helicopter.
The Lancaster County 911 Web site reported that dozens of emergency units were dispatched to a "medical emergency" at 10:45 a.m. Monday. Lancaster General Hospital officials have called in all available personnel and were told to be prepared for a large number of patients, WGAL reported.
John Lines of Lancaster General Hospital said that so far they have received three patients ranging in age from 6 to 15. One of them is in critical condition. Hershey Medical Center in Dauphin County, Pa., has also been warned that they will be receiving a patient via airlift.
Police are now searching around the school for victims who may be hiding in nearby fields.
The schoolhouse serves about 30 students from first to eighth grade.
WGAL-TV reported that the incident does not involve the Faith Mennonite School or Bart-Colerain Elementary, which are near the scene.

What's your problem here? Twenty-seven students in the community need a school, and there's no reason for them to rid a bus for three hours to get to the next town-if their religion allowed them to ride a bus in the first place.
Is there some reason you're being this way?

I don't think nonhuman was complaining about the structure of the school. I think this was about the fact that this shooting didn't even take place in a high school, as the others have. This one was with much younger students.
However, there's something else worth noting here which I think some people may be missing: this shooting wasn't perpetrated by a student. In fact, none of the shootings in the recent set seem to have been committed by students. In all cases -not counting the aborted attempts in Vegas- the perpetrator was an adult, apparently unconnected with the school being attacked.
I'm forced to echo the "what the hell is wrong with people?!" sentiment, though. Not that there's ever any acceptable or valid excuse for school shootings, but the previous ones weren't totally random like this; at the very least they were committed by people with a connection to the communities they destroyed. But this current batch is well and truly senseless.

What Millenium said. I mean what's wrong with someone that they would shoot up a bunch of little kids. Not that it's ok to shoot up a high school, but first graders? That just a new level of depraved.

I've been noticing that too. A very strange trend. Perhaps some sort of copy-cat crime, with older people trying to get revenge after the fact for the injustices they perceived themselves to have suffered back when they actually were in school?
Edit:
Yeah, guess so:
The gunman, Charles Carl Roberts IV, a 32-year-old truck driver from the nearby town of Bart, was bent on killing young girls as a way of "acting out in revenge for something that happened 20 years ago" when he was a boy, Miller said.

Kinda reminds me of the dynamic here where some folks have to tolerate those who are not that advanced. And Christian conservatives have to tolerate the most here.

Just as some of you cite President Bush for criticism because he seldom acknowledges mistakes the same principle applies to you.
As Christians we have a scorecard against which we try to measure up. Everyone can see how well or poorly we are doing by being aware of the Bible's teachings. And when we make mistakes, as we all do as human beings, we try to do better next time and to learn from our mistakes. The key is to acknowledge we have sinned and then try harder next time.
For this we have the Bible to use as guidance.
How do we know that you ever have reached your ultimate ambition or not? You might think you are perfect and that makes you able to stand on the sideline and criticize us because you have aimed at becoming what you are and you aspire no higher.

The problem here is that, when taken literally, the bible is a terrible "guide". You might as well try to learn about zoology by reading Winnie the Pooh.

Actually, I thought the story was about one, lone gunman; out to exact crimes against kids in a school to assuage his own deep-seeded anxieties from child-hood. I'm not sure anyone has said or is even remotely suggesting that this occurred because the gunman was Amish, or because the children were attending an Amish school right?

Marden, I'd like to point out that yours was the very first comment in this thread that derailed it. This shooting has absolutely no connection to Christian conservatives or the related issues. I also like how you try to set yourself above people by intimating that you are "advanced" while others are not.
Why don't you start your own threads if you want to discuss how advanced you are and how everyone should admire you?

Men are wired differently.
Evolution saw to that.

All men are created equal, but what they do after that point puts them on a sliding scale.

Pennsylvania Governor, Ed Rendell just used a TERRIBLE analogy in the press conference dealing with the aftermath of the shooting. In talking about how the act was random and how there was nothing that could be done about it he said something like, 'it's like if someone wanted to kill the President of the United States, even if he were surrounded by 50 Secret Service men, if someone wanted to swap their life for the President's there is nothing that could be done.'
THAT was a slip of the tongue that shows where his head is.
Just for fun, see if you can easily find his political affiliation on the PA website. He hides it.
He's a democrat.
What a jerky thing to say.

I believe he was basically paraphrasing something JFK said. That, essentially, despite all security measures, if someone is willing to trade their own life for the President's, they can succeed.
I don't think he was encoding a special secret message to his fellow Democrats to have some left-wing sleeper cell wake up.

I don't either. But with copycat killings going on in schools how dense must anyone be to not recognize the importance of suggestable words and ideas to whackkos.

I bet you can't cite ONE example of that. You are all hat and no cattle.

Here're two:
Methuselah at 969 years old.
Adam and Eve romping around with dinosaurs.
I'd pretty much have to recite 75% of the Bible. There are some real, historical events mentioned in there, but they're about as acurate as a Greek play.
