Sometimes, name-calling is essential. You just gotta call a spade what it is.

Before I start name-calling, I ask: do I want this person on my side, or do I want to single him out?

If I'm calling you names, we're not having an argument. I'm not trying to convince you, I'm mocking you for the benefit of observers. You're not an opponent, just a prop.

Incidentally, I never call anyone Islamophobic or homophobic. Those are non-words. A phobia is a mental disorder, and I'm not a shrink. Interestingly enough, individuals who call others "Islamophobes" are almost certainly "homophobes," and vice-versa.

The terms, "Islamophobe" or "racist" are being used as such.

I think it'd all depend on what they looked like. I'm about as likely to back down if they called me 'gay' or an 'asshole" or anything else derogatory.
