What Makes America Worth Fighting For?

I just heard a technology expert giving his political opinions in a long form radio interview.

He says that America's values and freedoms are what makes America worth fighting for.

If he means that that's ALL that's worth fighting for then he, of course, is wrong.

If what he was saying was true then noone in the world would misunderstand or oppose our efforts to help gain enslaved people their freedom or try to prevent their trying to set up a government which emulates our same values and freedoms.

If he was right then no Americans would be against the war in Iraq.

If he was right then no nation that has different values or freedoms than ours is worth fighting for.

If he was right then we had nothing to fight for before the Constitution was signed. And without the Constitution we have nothing worth fighting for.

Being able to go to a full nude titty bar and drink alcohol is what America, wait, um, Las Vegas is worth fighting for.

All jokes aside.

He was correct in that our values and freedoms are what makes it worth fighting for. That's also one of the things that makes others angry at us.

To some cultures, we are an upstart that is trying to impose our values globally.

Whether I agree or not is irrelevent, since it's been going on from the beginning of time. (Which I guess gives a couple of things away)

Our freedom is exactly what gives us the right to be for or against the war in Iraq. There are other countries that, if in the same posistion, citizens could only disagree in hushed voices.

Ultimately what makes America worth fighting for is that Americans believe it's worth fighting for. If this wasn't the case, we would have never become nor would we ever have had a volunteer military.

So wouldn't it also follow that those nations which DON'T have our freedoms and values have no reason to fight for their country?

Do the words "subjective" and "objective" have any meaning for you?
Have you ever tried to imagine how life would be if you would have been born outside the U.S.? England for example (at least the same language - should make it easier)?

Most English would take objection to the "same language" bit there.

Ha, I had the same thoughts when I posted it but since I am not English and it actually is the same language...

Not even close.

PS - most of the rest of the world don't care what makes "America worth fighting for", anymore than abe cares what Iraqi opponents of the invasion think about what makes "Iraq worth fighting for".

"... in 6 months if WMD are found, I hope all clear-thinking people who opposed the war will say "You're right, we were wrong -- good job". Similarly, if after 6 months no WMD are found, people who supported the war should say the same thing -- and move to impeach Mr. Bush." - moki, 04/16/03
