I recently saw someone who will remain nameless object to being categorized in a group that "doesn't know they're evil," on the grounds that they're not evil, and the assumption of evilness made by the statement "they don't know they're evil" is faulty. Now specifics aside, how can you make that objection? Doesn't that objection verify the original statement, the one where members of the group aren't able to recognize their own evilness? I guess it boils down to three subquestions: 1, are there any groups that you would say are evil, and 2, if so do they all know that they are evil, and 3, how do you know you're not one of them? This line of thought is certainly not unprecedented (the road to hell is paved with good intentions, yadda yadda yadda).
Another question: are motives inextricably involved in evilness? If they are, then perhaps the simple status of not knowing you're evil would prevent you from being evil. That doesn't sound like the definition of evil that I'm familiar with, but maybe it's closer to the truth.
Personally, a big part of my answer(s) would be that there are certain things in life that are never acceptable, under any circumstances. War crimes jump to mind. What do you all think?

1% of the population are psychopaths (ie. 1 in every 100).
Psychopaths have a profound lack of empathy. They use other people callously and remorselessly for their own ends. They seduce victims with a hypnotic charm that masks their true nature as pathological liars, master con artists, and heartless manipulators. Easily bored, they crave constant stimulation, so they seek thrills from real-life "games" they can win -- and take pleasure from their power over other people.
With this in mind, it explains alot about the world.

To Nicko: Look deeper to see what their values are and that tells the tale.

Is that your answer to my "Another question:"? Are you saying that however evil someone's actions might be, if their values are just (the well-intentioned villain), they are not considered evil? Isn't that called moral relativism, something your cohort disdains?

Well then he already addressed that. Their values are "me first."
