Witnesses to violent street crime should try to 'distract' attackers by honking their car horns or even 'jumping up and down'. That's according to Labour's Police Minister.
Jeremy Vine: "You see a young man looking aggressive, shouting at an old woman. What do you do? Do you retreat and ring the police?'
Tony McNulty: "I think you should in the first instance. It may well be simply shouting at them, blowing your horn or whatever else deters them and they go away."
Jeremy Vine: "He's now hitting her and the police haven't come. What do you do then?'
Tony McNulty: "The same, the same, you must always..."
Jeremy Vine: "Still wait?'
Tony McNulty: "Get back to the police, try some distractive activities."
Jeremy Vine: "What? Jump up and down?'
Tony McNulty: "Sometimes that may well work."

yep, that's gonna work. With brains like this on the case, no wonder we've got a high crime rate. I'm sure Tony McNutter would be happy if he was getting his head kicked in and all people around him did was to jump up and down.
It would be funny, but these twats are the government.

I dunno, jumping up and down could definitely be an effective way to take care of criminals. As long as it's their head you're jumping up and down on...
If it weren't for the government, I'd probably be living in the UK.

Some family friends of mine who live in Liverpool were just visiting this past weekend. Their 16-year-old son and his friend were jumped by a group of around 15 older teens about six months ago. They were just walking down the street, happened to be within fifty feet, and and the mob just took them and beat the crap out of them. His friend's jaw was shattered almost immediately, and he was left unconcious. Witnesses said that while he was unconcious on the ground, the group was kicking him and laughing.
I asked them if that was just a freak occurence, and he said, "Not really. It happens quite a bit, especially in Liverpool."
Guess he should've hopped around a bit.

This is why I carry a pistol.
I refuse to become a victim again.

guns are illegal in the UK. So is defending yourself. Carrying a small key ring baton is illegal.

Goord lord!
So what is a law abiding citizen to do?
Hide in their home?
Wait, y'all can't defend yourselves there either.
Damn.
Hey here's a thought, you're welcome here in America!

Luckily Britain's not a violent country or we'd really be in trouble.
A teenage boy was shot dead in his bedroom after two men forced their way into his home in south-east London.
BBC NEWS | England | London | Teenage boy shot dead in bedroom
The UK is a "high crime country" with a very high risk of common crime, a European Union (EU) survey suggests.
BBC NEWS | UK | UK a high crime country - survey
Then again, if you did do something, there's no room in the prisons left... Or they might move one of those harmless rapists or pedos out to make room for you.

God, I hate this country that I call home. It is becoming embarrassing, no, wait that is a lie. It has already become a joke.

On the British Army Unoffical site they have a wikipedia entry for Blair, who could be seen to personify the state of the UK gov't. It's not the country going mad, just the gov't (I think/hope).
Tony Blair - ARRSEpedia
I like the link at the end of the last paragraph.

In a society where only criminals have weapons...
I wonder how long before the European mainland sees this kind of violence.
When I was in Germany all you had was the skinheads picking on the "poppers".
And it was the Turks mugging folks at night. But generally they didn't murder you.
But that was 17 years ago.

ultimately in a society where the law defies common sense and self preservation - people are going to stop listening to it.
I was reading the other day that due to the number a new traffic laws and the proliferation of surveillance cameras and speed cameras, the average UK driver will suffer 3 driving bans in their lifetime. Even the gov't has realised this is daft and is trying to get it so that people can opt for training so they don't speed (doing 32 in a 30 zone, ye gawds!), rather than giving them penalty points.

Well, when there aren't enough criminals one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What's there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced or objectively interpreted – and you create a nation of law-breakers – and then you cash in on guilt. Now that's the system, Mr. Reardon, that's the game, and once you understand it, you'll be
much easier to deal with."

Oh yeah, she was a bit mad here and there... ...but her basic libertarian ethos (as displayed in "Anthem") was sound.
Randroids, like any hardcore followers of anything, are always a bit nuts (and I was thinking about Phelps while I was typing that).

Yep. Atlas shrugged. When I said "familiar?" I meant "does it remind you of anything?", like you know, any governments in the modern age or anything.

maybe that's why people who commit crimes - what we would consider crimes - tend to take advantage of the system because they don't see themselves as guilty. Whereas someone who throws themself on the mercy of the system without realising its true purpose, is used as an example.
just theorising here...

Depends on the area. South/South-west is usually very quit. Northern cities have their share of violence. Small eastern cities though... Negros/Gooks can get killed there, just for walking into the wrong people.
