For critisizing the islamic government.

Must be great to live under islamic rule.
Quite a bit of the global map is covered by islamic rule.

More generalizations, that just conveniently fit into your narrow viewpoints.

The article speaks for itself.

Go to Eygpt and and spout off against the government.
I dare you.

"An Egyptian court has sentenced a blogger to four years' prison for insulting Islam and the president."

Mighty marrow there huh?
At least my viewpoints don't have on blinders.

So Egypt imprisoned someone for criticizing Islam and the government. That is horrible, and I'm being sincere. But why don't you admit that the reason you posted this is to blast Islam itself, and to make it look like all Muslims are intolerant people? After all, "quite a bit of the globe is covered by Islamic rule." You conveniently don't mention that there are horrible Christians, who are not of one belief, even though they all call themselves Christians. I'm not the one with the blinders on.

You remember the bit about getting an infraction if you don't post comments? You know, rule 8? So what was he supposed to type?

Anyways... Here's a story about the tolerant muslims, to show just how well they play with others:

http://www.mailonsunday.co.uk/pages/...n_page_id=1770

Muslim schoolchildren should be treated differently from other pupils, the country’s most prominent Islamic organisation has said.

They should have separate changing rooms for sports and swimming, single sex classes for sex education, prayer rooms and new rights to Islamic worship, and different uniform rules, the Muslim Council of Britain said.

Boys should be allowed to grow beards for religious reasons, said new guidelines for schools published by the council.

The call for special treatment for Muslim pupils comes at a time when Government efforts are concentrated on eliminating segregation and encouraging 'British' values to tackle religious extremism.

I believe part of the point KarlG is trying to make is discussed in detail by this fellow here. The real issue is free speech and the ability to criticize government and religion without fear of reprisal. Note that part of what the blogger was accused of involved "defaming the President" of Egypt. Trying to pin this on Islam and only on Islam is disingenuous at best.

So? What do you suggest, that we invade them? I have a suggestion: let's stop sending billions of dollars in foreign aid to countries, including Egypt and Israel.

That way, if they are doing something you don't like, at least it's not on our dime.

that was an interesting article. I've been to Egypt and it "appeared" somewhat liberal but I guess freedom of expression is not the case. I'll have to make a mental note if I go back to not open my mouth.

So? We shouldn't be sending foreign aid to anybody. I'll keep my money instead, thanks. If you love Israel so much, then send your own money over there.

I think it is pretty obvious that what's going on in Egypt has very little to do with Mubarek's desire to defend Islam from it's critics and more so for him to stiffle any criticism of his government/self. Looping the charges and sentence around a defense of Islam scheme just allows him to pander to the Islamist forces within Egypt - the powerful Muslim Brotherhood and others.

That aside the issue raised a question for me. Is it possible for a Muslim to criticize Islam or a tenet of Islam.

For example, if I was one of the faithful living in Saudi Arabia, could I write outlining some tenets of Islam which I feel completely absurd and should be eliminated or changed, such as:

The ban on eating pork is stupid and an irrational fear of a safe food source or that the early exponents of Islam expanded it more out of a power grab than a belief in the teachings of Mohammed.

Is that permissable or forbidden in Islam?
