Slashdot | Halliburton Moving HQ To Dubai

Halliburton, once headed by VP Dick Cheney, has been awarded contracts valued at an estimated $25.7B for its work in Iraq."
The first line reads "defense contractor". I went to their website and I was expecting weapons development, but it is only civil engineering services. How is it a security threat to have their HQ over there? They have most of their employees in Iraq.

I don't get the hoohaw either. Unless it's just another of the irrational "Cheney once ran it, so we have to criticize it for everything" rants which we see so much of. Noth that there's anything wrong with maintaining reasonable oversight over government contractors or anything.
They do a huge amount of business in the middle east, right? So they have to be tied to Houston?

I think it has more to do with the fact that Halliburton has won BILLIONS in no-bid contracts in Iraq... and now, they just so happen to be moving their headquarters to Dubai, a tax free haven with weak banking laws. Not to mention that this company was run by Cheney, propnent of the war. Connect the dots.
Incidently I was just in Dubai last week, and although it is an awsome place to visit for tacky upscale shopping malls and every kind of fast food outlet on earth, the mixture of expats there was intriging. It was a combination of what looked like off-duty soldiers on leave from Iraq (mostly shellshocked looking 20 somethings), corrupt Russian mafia types with their girlfriends/mistresses, upscale prostitues, and of course the usual selection of filthy rich locals. Probably all good company for the likes of Halliburton.

I have to say I don't like how the deal looks either. This is the first time I can remember agreeing with one of Nicko's posts.

Oh wait... our government gives them no-bid contracts because of political connections.

billions in no-bid contracts for overpriced services for the US government.
These guys have been ****ing over the American people for years with the consent of their buddies in your government, and now they pull a fast one that means they don't even pay TAXES on the money they've siphoned off, and you don't MIND?
