It's the second time White House officials have indicated that data could have been erased as part of a tape recycling process
Well, it looks like they are finally trying to do something positive for the environment!

Cheers for the Bush administration!

Go read the slashdot discussions on this matter, they are informative.

If you recall, the Clinton administration had its own issues with E-mails, and by the end of it the E-mail system in the White House was running under Lotus Notes and automatically archiving whatever needed to be archived. When Bush came into office, the entire E-mail system was junked immediately in favor of Exchange, but nobody bothered to put together an automated archiving and retention system. When the White House IT folks were reminded that they needed to keep this stuff, their solution was to assign someone to periodically go through all the E-mails and manually save them in Exchange's mailbox format. Not a particularly robust solution, if you ask me.

No matter what your political leanings are (both in terms of national politics and E-mail server preferences), you've got to admit that the new White House IT staff screwed up big time. Corporations have been using both Notes and Exchange for quite a while, and anyone who administers them should know about the retention and archiving solutions available to them.

This isn't a screw up. Just like Nixon..this is destruction of evidence and obstruction of justice.

It's inexcusable, but it's hardly erasing a particularly crucial 18 minutes of audio tape. It's stupid and incompetent. But let's remember what old Bill's folks did when they vacated their offices. Remember all those missing "W" keys? The other sabotage done to all the office IT systems throughout the EOP? Yep, Bill's folks poked the pooch badly on that. Really intelligent and mature behavior there. The Bush administration is simply proving that they're not terribly bright and not terribly competent. Switching to Exchange vice Notes? Great! Not setting up a usable and dependable backup system? Awful!

There were previous issues not having anything to do with the war in which it has been shown that the IT staff of the White House is there because of their politics, not their credentials. Hold off on the "this is CRIMINAL!!!!" wailing until something really substantial comes up-you probably won't have to wait long. This is peanuts.

I didn't say it was anything like losing three months of emails in the White House. I pointed this out because it was so blatant and so juvenile. And the Clinton White House IT department was no great shakes either. They lost tons of stuff only to have it show up later when they were going to go to jail because of it. Wasn't there a huge amount of travel office traffic that disappeared-but not other stuff that was sent at the same time? In other words, the Clinton IT people were not any better and were pretty much after a quick "I don't have it" answer (until threatened with jail), whereas it looks like the Bush IT staff at least admits that their processes are so junked up that they can't find a whole quarter's worth of emails that they are required to keep backed up.
