From the article (well below the sensationalist headline)

large swathes of the world could face being without power for several months, although he admitted that was unlikely.

A more likely scenario was that large areas, including northern Europe and Britain which have “fragile” power grids, would be without power and access to electronic devices for hours, possibly even days.

Pffft. Up here, we don’t need no stinkin’ solar storms to do that. Just regular old storms knock out our electricity for hours and days no problem.

Maybe we could build a giant umbrella made of lead, then have someone carefully hold it over the earth during the storm.

Don't know how much you were impacted by the recent volcanic activity, but just by having airports shut down, things were 'interesting' in Europe for a few days. I imagine that having no radar, air traffic control, limited phone comms etc might also be 'interesting'. I seem to recall a large swathe of the US being blacked out a few years ago. I doubt that the insurance companies would classify that event as minor or sensationalist.

If something of this scale hit Northern Europe and the UK, I don’t think many, if any, insurance companies would pay up. Especially not since the little Eyjafjallajökull débâcle, where quite a few Northern European insurance companies actually did pay up ex gratia.

No, because the RF cage you've got built into your computing room walls will protect magnetic media from such incidences.

Don't say you haven't got an RF cage in your apartment. How on earth do you expect to stop the government from snooping on you if you're not in an RF cage?

I don’t have room for an RF cage. My RDF cage takes up all the available space.

Does anyone know if it’s safe to put RF cages inside RDF cages?

You should rebuild the RDF cage so it's smaller, then build the RF cage just outside it (a couple of cm away). That'll do the trick.
