DRUDGE: MICHELLE CAMPAIGNED INSIDE POLLING PLACE?

From Drudge Report:

First lady Michelle Obama appears to have violated Illinois law -- when she engaged in political discussion at a polling place!

The drama began after Mrs. Obama stopped off at the Martin Luther King Center on the south side of Chicago to cast an early vote.

After finishing at the machine, Obama went back to the desk and handed in her voting key.

She let voters including electrician Dennis Campbell, 56, take some photos.

"She was telling me how important it was to vote to keep her husband's agenda going," Campbell said.

According to a pool reporter from the CHICAGO SUN-TIMES at the scene, the conversation took place INSIDE the voting center, not far from the booths.

Illinois state law -- Sec. 17-29 (a) -- states: "No judge of election, pollwatcher, or other person shall, at any primary or election, do any electioneering or soliciting of votes or engage in any political discussion within any polling place [or] within 100 feet of any polling place."

A top Ilinois State Board of Elections official tells the DRUDGE REPORT that Mrs. Obama -- a Harvard-educated lawyer -- may have simply been ignorant of the law and thus violated it unintentionally.

"You kind of have to drop the standard for the first lady, right?" the official explained late Thursday. "I mean, she's pretty well liked and probably doesn't know what she's doing."

WHITE HOUSE DEFENDS ELECTIONEERING

When questioned about the brazen nature of Mrs. Obama's campaigning, press secretary Robert Gibbs defended the action.

"I don't think it would be much to imagine, the First Lady might support her husband's agenda," Gibbs smiled.

I dunno. They seem to have corrected the problem. When I went to vote yesterday, she was there. When I went to vote today, she was gone. I'm guessing she'll still be gone when I go vote tomorrow.

I'm going with "meh" on this one. It's not going to gain traction because it has to dig pretty deeply into "how many feet from the polling place" she actually was and is likely a non-story because it is a non-issue.

I mean... IMO.

For those slower folks out there, I actually don't give a crap about nontroversies like this. We can go around doing this all day - invent some stupid fake controversy about Michelle Obama one day, followed by one about Sarah Palin the next, and on and on and on. The fact that people like BadKosh fall for this stuff when there are more important things to worry about is truly sad.

I vote "meh" too. Illegal? Sure. So is jaywalking. I'm not going to cry if neither is strictly enforced when it's clear that the violator wasn't intending to do something that would violate the law, and given the circumstances it was a quick, isolated incident not likely to really have any effect.

It's not like she was standing outside, acting menacing with baseball bats or anything. I'm sure she would have been arrested had that been the case.

Seriuosly though, small potatoes....

I actually agree with ebuddy on this one. Obama's original stated reason for not wearing a flag pin was that he didn't want to be the typical politician who wraps himself in the symbols of patriotism, all the while being totally disrespectful of the meaning of those symbols. He said he'd rather love his country and not worry about the symbols, rather than put stock in the symbols themselves.

Whether you like Obama or not, this was a perfectly defensible position. There are a lot of politians, on both sides of the ideological fence, who wrap themselves in the flag as a substitute for actual patriotism. This phenomena is not in question. Problem is, I think there are some people who either a) willfully or unintentionally misinterpreted his position to claim that he was against patriotism in general, i.e. "Obama hates America!", which is the exact opposite of what he was saying, or b) feel so strongly about the symbols of patriotism that it didn't matter whether his position was defensible or not, they hated the idea of somebody not wearing a flag pin on purpose.

Obama wisely realized the simple fact that although his position is defensible, it doesn't matter - it's just a freakin' flag pin. If it makes people feel proud that their candidate is an American, there's no harm in wearing one, especially if you don't wear it for the same reasons as all those other obnoxious politicians wear one. If you are striving to represent everybody as President of the United States, you need to be sensitive to symbolic things like this, as long as they're not offensive or obtrusive. So now he wears the flag pin at all times.

I hated the over-the-top nature of this nontroversy as much as any lefty, but for some of the more thoughtful critics on the right, I think Obama responded correctly to the core of their criticism and did the right thing.

For all the right's hyperventilating about how much of a rigid ideologue Obama supposedly is (a theory which quickly falls apart under even the slightest scrutiny), this example provides a small yet instructive real-world counter example to all that - in the real world, Obama turns out to be willing to bend to almost any reasonable request, almost to a fault. This "on one hand, on the other hand" nature runs deep in the guy - I have to laugh every time I see a panicked righty freak out about how deeply "partisan" Obama is, and wonder how they manage to even live outside the same reality the rest of us are living in.
