What groups should qualify for tax-exempt status?

A question I had, but didn't want to bog down the other thread... we can agree that singling one group out to follow the rules but not others is wrong.

However, what groups deserve to be tax-exempt? I've not heard much talk on this. Do political groups in general, no matter the party, deserve it? Why?
