Is hardware growler/ growl worth it?
I love the eject blurb that comes up and you know you can unplug your hardrive. Beyond that, is this app worth it?

It seems to have endless tech issues over the years, maybe because it gets into the OS, I don't know. Are a lot of you ok with it or using it? thanks.

I'm wondering if I should bail as I did with Cocktail and Anti viruses.

If you mean Growl that installs into the System Preferences, it notifies about all sorts of events. For example, it will notify you when a download has completed with a browser, it will notify when a new tune is about to play with a music app that has a playlist, when a virus database for the antivirus is finished downloading, etc.

thanks C, I like that first one you mentioned, but I've never seen it notify when when a browser download completes. Do I have to set that up?
It does show me when hard drives are ejected, and I've never set that up.

I take it you like it.

I do like it. The Mozilla browsers have Growl notification built in, as far as I know. SeaMonkey and Firefox both use it, anyway. Cog, a music player, uses Growl to notify me when it starts playing a new tune from its playlist.

thanks C. I don't see growl in system prefs anymore, what is it under?
I'm on firefox but it does not to the alert for downloads, did you set that up?

BTW, I tried to do uninstall on my laptop, which is having growl issues, and it says the uninstall software I downloaded is damaged. I've downloaded that from 3 browsers.

Growl is under Other in System Preferences and its icon is a paw.
jeff k Apr 13, 2014 02:38 PM
I don't see an other in sytem prefs, but I did find growl prefs from the menu bar.

Again how did you set up download notification? I'm on firefox.
Curiosity Apr 14, 2014 01:42 AM
I did not set it up. It just happened. Firefox has the ability to interact with Growl already.

Well I have growl and it's not happening. Will ask growl...

If it's not in the system preferences, it's not properly installed.
jeff k Apr 14, 2014 02:29 PM
thanks S. I'll be talking with growl support soon directly and will ask about that...
Spheric Harlot Apr 14, 2014 04:18 PM
Why bother the support guys?

Why not just download a recent version from the growl website and install it and see if that works?

Growl - Downloads

Support folks LOVE when you at least *try* to solve issues on your own.

I'm exchanging emails with lead developer for four days, and he says (this morning) the current version does not appear in system prefs.

BTW on my desktop growl is not there, only the new hardware growler, yet I get the alerts when hardrives are ejected. The developer I'm talking to says that is from the OS and if that's all I want (those type of alerts) then there is no need to get growl, (which is interesting)
