Best browser for OS 9?
Hi everyone,
a friend of mine asked what the best browser for OS 9 was. I was just on track of saying Safari or Camino, when I suddenly noticed they are X-only. Now, Camino's underyling Mozilla could be an option, but since it moved to being Mach-O only, obviously the Carbon version isn't there any more either. So, does anyone know what the latest version was, one that was really stable, if possible? Is Opera actually an option? Netscape (being, at least AFAIK, pretty much Mozilla+spam, isn't it?). Any other thoughts? What about the most recent Internet Explorer version? I do hate MS too, but what's the quality like anyway? Just curious and hopeful somewhat out there might know. Steve |
Re: Best browser for OS 9?
I use Explorer v 5.1 with Mac OS 9.1, and it works very well. It's fast, and I haven't had any problems with it. I plan to upgrade to Mac OS 9.2.2 so I can continue using MSN Messenger, and I hope Explorer will work just as well as it does with OS 9.1, since both of these MS programs work together.
MS Messenger does not work with Mac OS 9.1 anymore, but it works with OS 9.2.2. |
IE works very well on OS 9.x.

Mozilla, yes
I think for Mozilla is the best. 1.0.2 should be a stable, practical browser. Or you can get 1.2.1. The "stable" 1.0.2 release is aviliable here. Mozilla 1.2.1 is availiable here.
Why Mozilla instead of IE? *Tabbed browsing - wonderful! *Better text zooming (any text zoom + more options, iBelieve) *Google search in address bar (optional) *Sidebar *Support for LINK tags and thus site navagition toolbars. *Download pausing. Handy on 56k modems (like mine.) * Popup blocking and basic ad blocking. *Multiple profiles *And more. Note: much of this list was taken from here. |

@ what about good old fashion Netscape Navigator ? ? ? ?

iCab is actually a very good OS 9 browser, but the next iCab 3.0 version (maybe 2004) will be the best choice so far.

nn 7.02
after having intermittent repeatedly with IE (which I do like with 9.1 by the way), I am now primarily uysing netscape navigator 7.02.. it has been very stabile.... no problems..... only thing is that it is a bit slower than IE (probably because of its aol affiliation ???).... I too am a bit ticked that my MSN Messenger no longer works.. (but thanks for the info--- I couldnt figure what suddenly happened to it!!!!!):hmm:
i also tried icab but found it VERY slow !!!! :brick: |

IE or Opera.

http://wamcom.org/ - "Newer" releases of Mozilla for OS 9, I think it's at version 1.3.1 at the moment, but it incorporates some bug fixes.
