I was wondering how to create a bootable zip disk, or how to boot from a network disk. I'm running Os 8.6
I tried just copying the system folder from
the CD to the zip disk and holding down the c key, but the machine won't boot. Neither will it boot if I select the network disk as the startup volume.
You can't copy the system software from a system CD to a zip disk. It won't work. You have to copy your system on your HD or custom install the system onto the zip disk. You need a NetBoot server (Mac OS X Server is the only one right now) to boot from a network disk.
Two ways to do this:
First way: Open up the Iomega Tools program (it's called "tools" within the iomega folder). Hopefully you will have the latest version, 6.3.1 (grab it at www.versiontracker.com). With a disk in, open the tools program and click on the little icon that says "make recovery disk". That should guide you....
Second way: Pop your mac os cd in and do a core install (or whatever install) on the zip disk itself.
The CD system folder will not boot because the System File has only the resources to boot from a CD.
Copy the CD System Folder to the Zip and then replace the System File with the one on your HardDrive.
