MS Word 6.0.1 - OS 8.5/Imac Conflict
I recently installed MS Office 4.2.1 (which includes Word 6.0.1) on my new IMac. Excel runs fine but Word hangs on the startup splash screen. MS has a patch out for Office '98 as there are well-documented minor conflicts with OS 8.5. Unfortunately that patch won't run on earlier versions of the MS Office, but I'm not convinced it's addressing my specific problem anyway.

Oddly enough I have a friend who is running my same version of Word on his G3 Powerbook/OS 8.5 with no problems. It almost seems there is some IMac specific font, extension, or control panel conflict. I've tried disabling ATM, and removing any non 8.5 fonts with no luck. Any suggestions? Help... I don't want to buy Office '98!

I had this same problem with my PowerBook 2400c and 8.5.1. The only way I could get it to work, after several other attempts, was to reformat the HD. Actually, you may want to try a clean install on 8.5. That may work before you go formatting it. Then reinstall Office. Surprisingly enough, it worked after that. I don't know why. It's one of those Microsoft things I guess. The funny thing was, it works perfectly fine on my G3 desktop and G3 PowerBook. Also, my 8500 and G3 minitower. No problems with those. All using 8.5.1 and Office 4.2.1a. Just the 2400c one time. Hope this helps a little.
