New Monitor: Dell U2713HM vs Apple Cinema LED
Work is finally going to upgrade the design group's monitors, yay! But they are leaning towards the cheaper option, the Dell U2713HM.

I've been pretty happy with my Apple monitor for almost 10 years, but the new apple monitors are glossy, and I thought I remembered designers complaining about that.

Both Apple and dell offer 2560x1440 resolution, 27” panel options.

If anyone has a Dell monitor, what is the color quality like? Any concerns?
Anyone with a newer apple monitor, is the glare really annoying? Is it so amazing that it's worth the extra $200?

I work in an office where I try to keep the light down anyhow, but sometimes people insist on opening the blinds.

Dell UltraSharp monitors use the exact same panels as Apple Cinema Displays. They're very good monitors without the Apple premium price.

The amazon reviews of the Dell were mixed, people enthusing and saying like you that's basically the same panel... but then there were those reporting odd noises and backlight issues. So we went Apple.

Dell usually does the panel lottery thing - they buy a high quality panel (but usually grade A- instead of A+ like Apple uses) for the first parts of a new model, and then switch it up with a cheaper panel when supply is tight or they want leverage against the supplier. This means that you can never trust the reviews for their stuff, because the review unit might be something completely different. I don't know about that specific model number, but most Dell displays are like that.

Apple does the lottery thing for SSDs, HDs and RAM, but never for display panels that I am aware of.

I did not know that! That explains the inconsistent reviews then.

They are here, they are as shiny as advertised, both in excellent quality and yes, glare. Comparing new to old apple cinema, I still prefer the old. My coworkers have their backs to the window so the glare isn't too bad, but I might have to switch... let's see if I adapt first.
