Man held in terror plot on mall near Rockford

A 22-year-old man's alleged plot to stage a deadly terrorist attack in Rockford days before Christmas was marked by violent intentions but no chance of success, according to federal charges released Friday.

A Muslim convert intent on "jihad," Derrick Shareef plotted to use hand grenades and a pistol to kill shoppers at the CherryVale Shopping Center outside of Rockford, authorities charged.

But federal agents and an undercover informant followed him from the plot's outset, U.S. Atty. Patrick Fitzgerald said Friday. Authorities didn't specify how they originally learned of Shareef.

Many elements of Shareef's alleged plot, including the idea to attack the mall, came from the informant, the charges said.

Shareef acted alone, and the public was never in any danger, authorities said.

Throughout the plot, he never had any weapons or the money to obtain them, Fitzgerald said.

But he did have violent intent, authorities said.

His own contribution were two measly sentences and instead of adding a just link, he pasted half of the article -- instead of quoting relevant parts. That's a clear rule 8 violation since the genuine content/copied content ratio.

So marden, take the hints and change your posting style.

No, you stop changing the rules to selectively mess with me. How about that?

Check the old versions of the rules. Check the way they were enforced.

ALL of the changes came about to suit your personal, petty, perverted need to somehow 'compete' with me and win. You can't do it as a poster. You aren't supposed to try as a mod.

You risk your position as a mod by using your powers for evil rather than for good.

And by so doing you weaken MacNN and the integrity of the mods and the rules.

Why can't you just leave me the **** alone?

I've sent out rule 8 infractions and warnings to other members (let alone infractions for other reasons). All of them -- except you -- have had a civil exchange of pms with me. You seem hell-bent to construe there is a campaign against you when there is none.

Looks like a violation to me also. Seems kind of senseless to post most of the article and then say almost nothing.

The rule wasn't changed to "selectively mess with you." The rule was changed for everybody. Everybody = not selective.

It does have the effect of messing with you, but that's because rather than follow the rules, you prefer to break them and then publicly complain about how persecuted you are when you're punished.

Since we've already had a similar discussion here, I'll close this thread for now. The last thread led to a clarification of rule 8 after getting feedback from other members. From now on, if you have any complaints or you wish to continue this discussion, please do so via pm -- like everybody else.
