Attack of the Pop-Ups

Spheric Harlot Mar 29, 2013 09:16 AM
Yep. Was just about to post this, as well.

Annoying, intrusive, and, amusingly, illegible (at least in the case of the Office 365 banner I got earlier).

Though legibility improves as you zoom in on the site: It looks like it's a banner that gets rendered at the resolution of whatever the webpage is scaled to, so as you zoom the webpage, the resolution of the banner increases as well.

Make it ****ing stop.

subego Mar 29, 2013 09:38 AM
Also, with me at least, it you try to close it, it backs you out of the page you're on and dumps you in the main forum page.

Ah yes, that's the worst of it. I'd forgotten because I'd immediately trained myself not to close it the first time I got one (about two weeks ago). This has been the second time, today.

Sorry guys, got sidetracked with a different trouble report which I'd thought was related to this. Turns out it wasn't.

As usual, need a URL or some page code. I've turned off my own blocks for awhile, but there's no guarantee I'll stumble across it. It could be an ad that triggers on smartphones, or only on Intel Macs.

Spheric Harlot Apr 1, 2013 02:38 AM
Smartphones.

subego Apr 1, 2013 05:40 AM
It's sneaky. For the ad I posted the pic of, you can't get a link. No matter what you do, it takes you straight to the App Store.

reader50 Apr 1, 2013 01:07 PM
I don't own a smartphone, and it hasn't shown up yet in Firefox. Perhaps a dev utility for iOS Safari? This would be so much easier if Apple allowed plugins on the iOS side.

subego Apr 1, 2013 02:18 PM
What exactly is the banner ad company's excuse here?

"I've got a BS popup happening from X"

"Oh, sorry. We have no way of associating our clients by name with the poop we're shoveling you. Funny how that works, innit?"

reader50 Apr 8, 2013 01:42 AM
Are any of you guys who see these, getting ISP service from CMA Communications?

Ars article on ads being injected into pages of ISP subscribers.

I've been told in the past our ad agreements forbid popups, and the timing is compatible. So maybe it's a mistake (the most common cause in the past) or maybe it's something more interesting.

Spheric Harlot Apr 8, 2013 04:45 AM
I'm in Germany.

subego Apr 8, 2013 01:04 PM
I'm with Comcast, which has been accused of injections, but not for ads.

You can use the OS X Safari dev tools with the iOS simulator, FWIW...

Spheric Harlot Apr 26, 2013 08:23 AM
FWIW, there was a database outage yesterday (day before?), and since then, these ****ing pop-ups have returned to the iPhone, AND Safari on OS X (Mountain Lion, latest everything) is crashing like crazy for me while browsing MacNN (mostly while reloading the "daily" forum search that I use as a landing point).

I'm gonna go ahead and construe some sort of relationship between these incidents.

I use Ghostery, but no other extension that should conceivably affect MacNN forum performance on this machine.
I do use Detox and JavaScript blacklist, but if those affect this forum, you've got problems.

reader50 Apr 26, 2013 02:19 PM
I haven't heard what caused the DB outage. On the theory a hack attempted to inject code into our templates, I looked over the header and footer.

Didn't find anything, but the footer contained some typos. I've fixed those.

Edit: not fixed, introduced new problems with menu dropdowns. And reverting didn't fix it. I'll have to dig into this tonight.

Edit2: footer restored via DB edit. Some character escape stuff tripped things up, preventing a revert via the usual controls.

They're baaaaaack...

subego May 28, 2013 12:09 PM
Help! They're on every page!

mkbhatia May 29, 2013 03:48 PM
Are they back in specific countries or browsers? I couldn't reproduce this at all on iOS 7/iPhone (Safari or Chrome)..

anybody have any other details of where or how to produce these? The ad codes or info has not changed in years, so this must be some sort of mistake at this point.

Spheric Harlot May 29, 2013 03:51 PM
Only on iPhone, not iPad, and they've been on every single page again here in Germany since yesterday. Same ****ing office 365 ad.

I just tried "x"ing it away now, and while it took me to the main forums page, it appears to be gone for now.

Spheric Harlot May 30, 2013 07:56 AM
It's back.

Stogieman Jun 2, 2013 12:11 AM
Pop-ups are now appearing on my iPad.

subego Jun 3, 2013 01:28 PM
I get them on the iPad too.

I hammered on desktop Safari with iPhone selected in the develop menu, but couldn't get one to pop up.

ajprice Jun 4, 2013 10:40 AM
I get this pop up banner too, definitely on iPad, maybe iPhone but can't remember. The one I get is always for a Mazda 6. As above, pressing the X on the banner goes back to the main forum page.

subego Jun 4, 2013 02:19 PM
Ha!

I've got this little space herpy caught in a desktop browser window. It thinks I'm on an iPhone.

What do you need? Page source? It's very long.

reader50 Jun 4, 2013 03:47 PM
Save the whole page source if need be. Whatever it takes. PM me, and I'll give you an email address.

Take a screen shot too. After saving the source, maybe try to save as a full archive. Though that often reloads all the resources, which is likely to omit the elusive ad.

subego Jun 4, 2013 04:10 PM

subego Jun 4, 2013 04:12 PM
Full archive didn't seem to reload.

subego Jun 4, 2013 04:17 PM

reader50 Jun 5, 2013 03:48 AM
Got them. Better leave them up, in case other staff need to look them over.

The ad wasn't captured in the HTML, but it was in the archive. It was a good idea to capture both ways.

It's Appsnack via tribalfusion, injected at the very end of the page. I've sent the code and analysis upstairs.

subego Jun 6, 2013 12:55 AM
I shall leave them up as long as you need. :)

FWIW, I still have the actual window with the ad open should some form of long distance forensics be required.

subego Jun 9, 2013 03:08 PM
Sadly, we still appear to have our simplex situation.

Spheric Harlot Jun 9, 2013 03:41 PM
And Safari, while not showing any pop-ups on the OS X machine, is crashing like crazy again today while surfing this forum.

subego Jun 13, 2013 02:34 PM
We're going to need all the Valtrex in Hollywood.

Rumor Jun 13, 2013 08:58 PM
On the iPad, clicking the ad just goes to whichever site it is for. Mine is currently Gamestop. I'm not sure how to get the link data.

subego Jun 20, 2013 06:36 AM
So, what's the status of this getting some Carmex?

I'm running out of herpy medicine jokes.

subego Jun 30, 2013 05:41 PM

subego Jul 5, 2013 02:22 PM
I think part of me will be sad when this actually gets fixed.

ajprice Jul 5, 2013 03:05 PM
The Mazda banners aren't showing up for me at the moment. My fingers are crossed that they don't come back.

subego Jul 5, 2013 03:14 PM
I was getting stuff as recently as yesterday.

subego Aug 6, 2013 02:09 PM

I've been on mobile this week and have seen a ton. Floaty things that scroll up into the page and generally get in the way.

subego Aug 20, 2013 08:47 PM
I do not want a Surface RT.

I do not want it in a house.
I do not want it with a mouse.
I do not want it with a keyboard.

I do not want a Surface RT.

Stogieman Aug 24, 2013 04:32 AM
Yeah, I'm getting that MS Surface ad all the time now. Any update on a fix Reader?

reader50 Aug 24, 2013 11:41 AM
It's not happening at the forum level. They could be coming from our adserver (though that should have caught it by now), or injection at the ISP level (either end). I've been waiting for comment from higher ups too.

subego Aug 26, 2013 03:14 PM
This is the same appsnack/tribalfusion deal as before. Isn't that fishy?

Spheric Harlot Nov 25, 2013 05:41 AM
****ers are back. Not Office 365, but Westin hotels, now.

ghporter Nov 25, 2013 06:43 AM
I got one from Walmart just a few minutes ago...

subego Nov 25, 2013 02:29 PM
Wal-Mart India.

Weird.

ghporter Nov 28, 2013 09:05 PM
I've gotten a couple more WalMart pop ups today, They're at the bottom of the page, and they tend to catch gestures for scrolling on an iPad. Very nasty.
