Server too busy errors?
Been getting those the last couple days. How....

reader50 Mar 8, 2014 12:29 AM
We've seen it too. Where "we" = people other than myself. It's worked perfectly on all my visits, leaving nothing to investigate. We're trying to catch it in the act.

PeterParker Mar 8, 2014 07:37 AM
Just got a few here, too... So much traffic? At this time of day? Thought it was mostly a US forum, still.

ebuddy Mar 8, 2014 10:24 AM
It appears more when trying to actually post something. You hit 'submit' and you get the server too busy error. It's also hanging on 'submits' and when you click submit again may tell you that you've already posted and immediately taking you to it. For example, I had to post this very statement twice.

Happening more than half the time. I don't think it's a "visiting" thing, but a posting thing.

My guess is that it is the server's 500 error message page, which can be triggered with a process running out of memory, not having enough child processes to serve requests, or a runtime error (PHP, in this case) being triggered. Usually the performance-related causes (when the server would actually be too busy) appear after a timeout, which makes me think it is a runtime issue where the specifics of the error would be logged, since they aren't being output to the browser (i.e. PHP's "display_errors" variable is disabled).

Sorry, I don't mean to play back seat admin to the MacNN admins here, just sharing some of these for those curious and interested in learning about these sorts of things based on my speculation :)

reader50 Mar 8, 2014 01:27 PM
Speculation welcome, since I still haven't caught it. Another staffer did, server load ~25 ... but only a little over 100 visitors. Either they all loaded a page at the same time, or it's a resource constraint.

subego Mar 8, 2014 11:59 PM
Happening lots and lots over here. There's some correlation with posting, but not total.

subego Mar 9, 2014 12:01 AM
Hit me immediately after the above post, so this will be a test.

subego Mar 9, 2014 12:02 AM
No problems with above post, or this post.

And.reg Mar 9, 2014 11:47 AM
I got a bunch of 502s yesterday :\

reader50 Mar 9, 2014 06:19 PM
This may be fixed, as of a couple hours ago.

And.reg Mar 12, 2014 07:13 PM
I just got a vBulletin Database error message...

seemed like an isolated instance, but I would recommend that MacNN staff be advised that this happened as it may reoccur.

The doldrums of January too much to handle now?

reader50 Jan 26, 2015 07:15 PM
Points for an unusually philosophical and obscure complaint. January aside, I think life is still worth living. The tall buildings are not tempting at this time.

The Final Dakar Jan 27, 2015 09:58 AM
Thread title. Been happening on and off a week or two.

reader50 Jan 27, 2015 01:38 PM
Server load ATM is 0.02 - have you noticed any pattern, such as time of day? Or a particular person online whenever it happens?

The Final Dakar Jan 27, 2015 01:43 PM
A good guess would be within an hour of me posting in this thread yesterday.

reader50 Jan 28, 2015 01:36 AM
Webserver loads today. All times Pacific. (GMT - 8)
Code:

- wrong server -

Thorzdad Jan 28, 2015 09:24 AM
I hit a short period of "Server too busy" messages on Monday. Forget what time, though.

The Final Dakar Jan 28, 2015 10:07 AM
Yesterday was fine, as far as I remember.

The Final Dakar Jan 28, 2015 03:44 PM
Just was down 3 minutes, starting at approx 14.41 EST

reader50 Jan 28, 2015 04:13 PM
right now: - wrong server -
I spot-checked yesterday, but as you can see, none of the readings were suspicious. If we can find a pattern to the times, I can kick it to the backend guys and tell them where to look in the logs.

The Final Dakar Jan 29, 2015 10:20 AM
Down again at 9.11

The Final Dakar Jan 29, 2015 11:12 AM
Again at 10.10

The Final Dakar Jan 29, 2015 11:15 AM
And again at 10.13-14

And.reg Jan 29, 2015 12:15 PM
Checking in, it happened last night.

reader50 Jan 29, 2015 01:36 PM
My bad, I was checking loads on the wrong server.

0.96 1.00 0.84

More promising, but still not running away.

The Final Dakar Feb 2, 2015 11:57 AM
Again

reader50 Feb 2, 2015 03:03 PM
4.87 3.41 3.49

I've been checking it on and off, but haven't seen anything suspicious yet. ie - 10+.

The Final Dakar Feb 2, 2015 03:07 PM
It went down twice more today. Once in the past hour.

reader50 Feb 2, 2015 03:21 PM
Do you have the ShowIP plugin installed (or equivalent) which shows the server IP you're talking to? MacNN uses a load-balancing system, with two web-facing servers last I checked. I'm currently getting pages from 207.58.150.180 for example.

Since I'm not catching the issue, it might be helpful to note the time and server IP you get the message from. If I kick this to the backend guys to investigate, I've got to have something to give them. At the moment, I've got nada. A few days of time/server overload points would be a start.

The Final Dakar Feb 2, 2015 03:23 PM
I'm on Safari. At work.

The Final Dakar Feb 4, 2015 03:03 PM
9.50 and 1.50 today. I feel like they're localized around 10 and 2

subego Feb 4, 2015 08:03 PM
Just happened at 6p Central.

Cap'n Tightpants Feb 5, 2015 09:45 AM
Happening now, sporadically. 8:45am EST

subego Feb 5, 2015 05:56 PM
12:55 and 3:55 Central.

besson3c Feb 5, 2015 07:52 PM
reader50: have you tried running iotop or iostat? Running php-fpm and upping its restart frequency (which is great for dealing with memory leaks)? Running mysqltuner? Analyzing the Apache server-status page if you use Apache? Running fail2ban to protect from DDOS attacks?

Just bouncing some ideas off of you guys...

reader50 Feb 5, 2015 10:24 PM
I don't have CLI access on the web servers. But I have caught excessive loads twice now, and have been logging the reports above.

Once we reach 10 instances, I plan to forward it to the server guys.

That is god-damned uncanny. What do you guys have the server scheduled to do at 10 or 5 of?

subego Feb 6, 2015 07:39 PM
I've got a date with a server busy error in T-minus 13 minutes.

All times are GMT -4. The time now is 01:53 PM.
