iPod Touch Location Services and MLB App
I meant to bump this thread, but it was deemed Too Old to Bump, so I've started a new thread on what may be the most important thing you read all day....
The new MLB.com app for the iPhone 3.0 OS adds the ability to stream live games, and every day they pick one or two games to stream with the app. However, MLB doesn't want to put you in the awkward situation where you are watching a game on your phone which you could be watching on your local Cable TV network. Therefore, they use the iPhone's location services to determine the location of the phone before streaming, to make sure that your viewing experience is as contractually pure as the players themselves.
All the iPhone apps can, of course, work on the iPod Touch as well. However, the iPod Touch has no GPS unit in it, so it relies on WiFi for location services. (Presumably, the iPod Touch cannot communicate with the MLB mind-control satellites that are tracking our every move.) If Location Services cannot establish a location for you, the MLB.com app assumes you are in all places at once, and disables all video.
This is where the old thread comes in: If your iPod Touch location service is not working, just add the MAC address of your WiFi Access Point to the SkyHook Wireless database, and in about a week's time it will work.
I will leave it up to your discretion which address you put in the database for your WiFi access point (and whether or not that address is in the blackout region of your favorite team....)
