Test Studio for iOS 2.0 automates reviewing, user feedback
Software development tool maker Telerik has released an automated testing tool for iOS applications called Test Studio for iOS (free). The program introduces a cloud sync web portal for both test automation and beta user feedback and works with web, native and hybrid apps. The cloud sync portal gives developers a way to get real-time feedback from beta testers, track automated tests and even author UI tests that can then be run on the app being developed. It avoids image-based detection in favor of object-based recording.
The latter feature ensures that the correct element of an application is targeted when tests are played back, rather than relying on screenshots -- so if locations of elements change, the feedback from users is still valid. It goes beyond gesture recording and allows developers to update and extend tests without having to re-record them, and includes tests for all common UIKit-based iOS controls.
Test Studio also doesn't require any jailbreaking, unlocking or other modifications to the stock OS install. All crash reports and user feedback are stored in a common repository and can be forwarded to other systems such as Github. The program supports smart verifications for control properties, displays actual versus expected values as well as recording gestures, taps and so on.
The downloadable app from the App Store feature mobile web testing capabilities only, but extensions that add native and hybrid app testing are available from Telerik at no cost. The cloud syncing of tests, results and feedback from users is available for free until May as an introductory feature, with the centralized feedback costing $19 per app per month, while test syncing will cost $29 per month and includes priority support. The company is holding a webinar on the product on March 13 at 11:30AM ET.
