OS X open source 'Camino' browser no longer under active development
Early Macintosh open source browser Camino has ceased development. The developers cited the fact that the browser is "increasingly lagging behind the fast pace of changes on the web," making it unsafe to use. The last update the browser received was in March of 2012.
The browser once known as Chimera was based on Mozilla's Gecko engine, and was one of the first browsers to adopt the OS X "Aqua" aesthetic. It implemented OS X services such as Keychain and Bonjour for advanced features, and implemented tabbed browsing before Apple's own Safari browser did.
Founding developer Dave Hyatt was hired away from the project by Apple for Safari in 2002. Mike Pinkerton accepted a position at Google in September 2005. The final 2.1.2 release was made on March 14, 2012 and runs in OS X 10.4 through 10.8.
