Apple Design Award winners include Letterpress, Yahoo Weather
The <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/287427==http://www.macnn.com/articles/12/06/12/paper.deus.ex.human.revolution.among.winners/" rel='nofollow'>Apple Design Awards</a> for 2013 for iOS apps have been <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/287428==https://developer.apple.com/wwdc/events/awards/" rel='nofollow'>announced</a> through a web page and a <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/287429==https://twitter.com/AppStore" rel='nofollow'>a series of tweets</a> from Apple's @AppStore account. Among the winners are cloud productivity tool <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/287430==http://evernote.com/" rel='nofollow'>Evernote</a>, word game <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/287431==http://www.atebits.com/letterpress/" rel='nofollow'>Letterpress</a> and <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/287432==https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/yahoo!-weather/id628677149?mt=8" rel='nofollow'>Yahoo Weather</a> -- the latter largely upstaged earlier in the day by the new <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/287433==http://www.macnn.com/articles/13/06/10/apple.radio.activation.lock.siri.car.integration.k ey.features.of.update/" rel='nofollow'>default weather app</a> in iOS 7, which strongly resembles the Yahoo app in style and function. A number of other companies also won Apple Design Awards, as well as two student entries that won student ADAs.<br />
<br />
The two student-designed apps were to-do organizer <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/287418==http://getfinish.com/" rel='nofollow'>Finish</a> and <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/287419==http://www.mosaic.io/" rel='nofollow'>Mosaic</a>, an app that lets multiple iOS devices act as one big screen. Other winners included Panic's <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/287420==http://panic.com/coda/" rel='nofollow'>Coda 2</a>; games <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/287421==https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/badland/id535176909?mt=8" rel='nofollow'>Badland</a>, <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/287422==http://www.ridiculousfishing.com/" rel='nofollow'>Ridiculous Fishing</a> and <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/287423==https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/sky-gamblers-storm-raiders/id574375380?mt=8" rel='nofollow'>SkyGamblers</a>; iPad sketching program <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/287424==http://procreate.si/" rel='nofollow'>Procreate</a>, and educational and environmental app <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/287425==https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/wwf-together/id581920331?mt=8" rel='nofollow'>WWF Together</a>.<br />
<br />
Letterpress is a wordplay game from former Apple designer Loren Brichter, and like Yahoo Weather gives current users a taste of the style prevalent in iOS 7, which is to be released <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/287426==http://www.macnn.com/articles/13/06/10/apple.radio.activation.lock.siri.car.integration.k ey.features.of.update/" rel='nofollow'>later this year</a>. Evernote, which has long been a "best of" awarded app and popular seller in the App Store, received the nod for its ongoing efforts at redesigning and reinventing itself to be increasingly useful to its customers.<br />
<br />
On its web page saluting the winners, Apple also showcased three other student-created apps that allowed their creators to win tickets to WWDC. The students came from Chicago, New York and the Netherlands, with brief bios and descriptions of the created apps. All three young developers have already launched apps on the App Store, and range in age from 13 to 19 years old.<br />

"the latter largely upstaged earlier in the day by the new default weather app in iOS 7, which strongly resembles the Yahoo app in style and function"

Oh for cyring out loud. "Upstaged"? Really? The iOS weather app pulls its data from Yahoo Weather, it has done so for a while and continues to do that in iOS 7. There's a big fat "Powered by Yahoo Weather" right at the bottom. So, by definition, it more or less IS the Yahoo Weather app.

That's true, just as the Stocks app has relied on Yahoo info for years now. But which do you think is going to get used more now -- Apple's version of Yahoo Weather, which is included on the device, or the separate but nearly identical Yahoo Weather app you have to download? That's what I think is meant by "upstaged."
