American Airlines completes rollout of iPads to cockpits
American Airlines has finished deploying iPads to all of the planes in its fleet, according to an announcement. Over 8,000 tablets have been issued to pilots and trainers as a replacement for their earlier paper-based flight bags, which weighed around 35 pounds each. Each iPad is loaded with essential information such as flight manuals and navigation charts.

While the switch should life easier for pilots, American Airlines also has a financial motivation for making the switch. The company says it expects to save about 400,000 gallons of gas every year, worth about $1.2 million. It hasn't, however, said how much the iPads and their implementation are costing.
Despite using iPads in the cockpit, the airline is not depending solely on Apple. Flight attendants are being issued Samsung Galaxy Note phones, which are tablet-like but still compact enough to be used in small spaces.
So, why do they still announce "turn off all electronic devices" during takeoff, if you can use an iPad?
