Apple alters affiliate program with new networks, countries
Apple is making significant changes to its affiliate program for content on iTunes, the iBookstore, and the Mac and iOS App Stores, according to an announcement. The program gives participants a small commission for sales made via specially-formatted links. The main change is the elimination of LinkShare and dgm as affiliate networks, leaving just Tradedoubler and a new addition, Performance Horizon Group.

PHG will handle most of an expanded global reach, including the US, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, Turkey, and "many countries" in Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. Tradedoubler, previously responsible for Europe and Brazil, will now support the rest of South America as well. People using LinkShare or dgm will need to set up a new account with PHG and update links by October 1st in order to continue pulling in revenue.

Apple needs to make its affiliate program much, much easier, particularly for developers and authors. I looked into it and found it too complicated to be worth the trouble.

Having third parties handle it is part of the problem. I don't understand why selling apps or software on the iStore doesn't automatically get affiliate status.
