Apple hires Toronto Blue Jays AGM for App Store Sports spot
The assistant general manager of the Toronto Blue Jays is leaving the organization to join Apple as an executive with responsibility for managing the Sports and Entertainment sections of the App Store, according to reports. Jay Sartori has been with the team since 2010 and will be leaving next month for the new job. His exact duties at Apple haven't been revealed, but the company has been working closely with Major League Baseball to enhance its apps' integration with other Apple technologies.
Prior to his role with the Blue Jays, Sartori directed baseball operations for the Washington Nationals, and worked as a manager of salary and contract administration for MLB corporate before that, reports SportsNet. He also has a background in finance, with previous positions at Robertson Stephens and Pacific Growth Equities.
Earlier this week, MLB announced that it was going to use Apple's "iBeacon" technology to significantly add to the experience of using its MLA At the Ballpark app, as well as enhance the app's integration with Passbook with a view to cover more than just tickets, for example food coupons that appear when fans are actually inside the stadium. Whether Sartori would contribute to those efforts hasn't been clarified, but he does have a background in big-league finances and statistics.
Apple hasn't officially commented on the hire, and the Blue Jays have yet to name a replacement for Sartori.
