Final Fantasy VI remake heading to iOS, Android this winter
Final Fantasy VI, originally released in North America as Final Fantasy III back in 1994, will become an iOS and Android game sometime this winter, Square Enix has announced. The port will feature enhanced graphics while remaining 2D and 16-bit in nature, and will likely be based on the GameBoy Advanced or PlayStation port of the original game. A specific release date beyond "this winter" was not announced, and will follow the forthcoming mobile release of Final Fantasy IV: The After Years.

FF VI, long-awaited by fans and also with a vague release data of "this winter," will be part of the Legacy series. Square Enix director Takashi Tokita told gaming site Kotaku that the new release "is basically like a remake of the original [Final Fantasy] VI ... but there have been some enhancements."

He said that "the battle systems have been altered for the other [mobile remakes] ... for instance, 'grinding' was an issue and people had to spend a lot of time leveling up. Now on the mobile devices, the battle systems have been adjusted so you don't have to fight as much and can enjoy the game for what it is."
FF VI will be more "retro" in style than the 3D version of Final Fantasy: The After Years, Tokita added. He also hinted that the Legacy series may not end with FF VI; fans have clamored for mobile versions of Final Fantasy VII, long regarded as one of the best of the series. "We are aware that we have tons of [FF] VII fans ... we have VII fans in our own company," Tokita said. "If this Legacy project works out well, we would like to one day be able to work with VII."
